Zaur Rzayev was an Azerbaijani singer and khanende, a performer of folk songs and mugham, who led the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces for more than three decades. He was named a People's Artist of Azerbaijan in 2003 and died in Baku on 29 October 2026, aged 74.

He was born Zaur Alihuseyn oglu Rzayev on 28 January 1952 in the settlement of Karrar in the Kurdamir district, into the family of a railway worker, Alihuseyn Rzayev. As a child he moved with his family to Hajigabul, where he attended school No. 5 until the eighth grade. He then went to Baku, studying first at the Baku Library Technical School and then at the Asaf Zeynally Music College, which his love of music had drawn him to.

While still young he became a soloist with the folk instruments ensemble of the Azerbaijan State Philharmonic. In 1976 he began military service at the Baku Officers' House, becoming its soloist and artistic director of its song and dance ensemble. He later sang as a soloist at the Azerbaijan State Song Theatre, and in 1980 he entered the vocal department of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory, now the Baku Music Academy.

In 1994 he became head of the Song and Dance Ensemble of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, a post he held until his death. The Ministry of Culture credited him with an important contribution to promoting patriotic spirit through music, and praised his distinctive style, warm voice and rich repertoire of folk songs, composed songs, mugham and tasnifs, with which he represented Azerbaijani music at home and abroad.

His honours included Honoured Artist of Azerbaijan in 1998 and People's Artist of Azerbaijan in 2003. In Dagestan he was named Honoured Art Worker in 2000 and People's Artist in 2008.

Rzayev was taken to the Central Oil Workers' Hospital in Baku in serious condition on 14 October 2026 after a long illness and was treated in intensive care. He died there at 18:30 on 29 October 2026. His son, the Honoured Artist Azer Rzayev, confirmed the death, and the Ministry of Culture issued its condolences. Reports said a farewell would be held at his home and that he would be buried at the Qurd Qapisi cemetery in Baku.

74 is no age to lose a voice like that. Read about him leading that Armed Forces ensemble for thirty years and just sat with it a while. Thinking of his son Azer tonight.
