Zimani Kadzamira

Professor Zimani David Kadzamira, the Malawian academic, diplomat and university leader who steered the University of Malawi as Vice-Chancellor and helped connect African research networks, died in Blantyre on 18 September 2026. He was 85. Tributes from family, former students and colleagues described a calm scholar who lived by example and left a lasting mark on higher education in Malawi.

Born on 1 July 1941 in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Harare, Zimbabwe), Kadzamira began school there before returning to Nyasaland for secondary education. He studied political science at Princeton University, graduating in 1966, and earned a doctorate in government from the University of Manchester in 1974. That same year he joined the young University of Malawi as an assistant lecturer, beginning a career that would span more than four decades at the institution.

He rose steadily through the ranks: senior lecturer, associate professor, Dean of Social Science, Vice Principal and then Principal of Chancellor College in 1981. He became a full professor in 1991, later served as Principal of Bunda College of Agriculture (now Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources), and headed the Department of Political and Administrative Studies at Chancellor College between 1998 and 2001. From 2005 to 2009 he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of Malawi, succeeding David Rubadiri and helping guide the university's national and international work. Current Vice-Chancellor Samson Sajidu remembered him as a distinguished scholar and administrator who advanced research and engagement far beyond campus walls.

Public service ran alongside academia. Kadzamira was Malawi's first ambassador to Japan from 1992 to 1994, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations. He served on the Supreme Council for Sports in Africa for Zone VII (1987-1992), on the WorldFish Center board (1990-1995), and from February 2007 as chairperson of the UbuntuNet Alliance, which links African research and education networks. Colleagues later credited his six years in that chair with helping establish UbuntuNet as a key continental player in research networking.

His family name is well known in Malawi. His sister Cecilia Tamanda Kadzamira served as official hostess to founding president Hastings Kamuzu Banda; another sister, Mary, was Banda's private secretary. Yet Zimani Kadzamira built a reputation of his own. Family spokesman Shepherd Quindanguo Tembo called him jovial, loving and young in spirit, a motivation to younger relatives through academic excellence. Lewis Dzimbiri of the Malawi School of Government recalled his humanity and care for people. He is survived by his wife, Esime Baghwanji Kadzamira, and four children.

Malawi has lost a teacher of teachers and a builder of institutions. From lecture halls in Zomba to embassy corridors in Tokyo and research networks across Africa, Professor Kadzamira's work helped open doors for generations who followed.
