I don't even know how I first heard Les Classels, I think it was a French class in Guadalajara back when I was maybe twenty, the teacher played us a cassette to teach pronunciation and it was Ton amour a changé ma vie, and I remember thinking the voice was so clean, so sure of itself, and I never forgot it even though I couldn't understand half the words back then. Years later I found out they all dressed in white, hair, suits, even the instruments, which felt like something out of a film I would have loved as a kid obsessed with old movies. 84 years old. I looked it up twice because it didn't seem possible that voice belonged to someone that age. edit: just read he was still singing in his later years, that makes it sadder somehow.

My cousin in Guadalajara called to tell me, she follows BITSAANA on LinkedIn for her own engineering group back home. Fifty seven. I never knew Alka Singh myself, just saw her posts about mentoring young engineers from Sindri and they always felt sincere. Sending strength to her husband and the three kids.

My sister called me from Mexico City last night just to tell me. We used to watch Doctor X together when I would visit, she always said the fight scenes looked more real than anything on the big American shows. Never knew her name until the credits started adding that little card. So strange to lose someone you watched for years without ever knowing who she was.

My mother called from Porto to tell me, she still has her membership card from decades ago. Number 14,458, she said, like it meant something to her. Sad way to go, in the stadium he loved.

my nephew sent me an article about him this morning and I sat there thinking about that Chinese room thing, the little rule book and the slips of paper, I first heard about it on a documentary about AI years ago and it changed how I explained computers to my students, I'm not even a philosophy person, I just teach science at a community college in Guadalajara. anyway it stuck with me that following rules isn't the same as understanding, I think about that with my own kids and their phones honestly. he was 93. edit: just read he was at Berkeley almost sixty years, that's wild, one place that long

32 years old. That's all I keep thinking about. Sending strength to her siblings, I hope they find some peace now.

Chinatown in French will always be his Chinatown. He understood Jack Nicholson's voice from the inside out. Sixty years of that kind of care. Qué pérdida.

A scholar who refused to be pinned down, who believed in the unfinished, the provisional, the many-threaded. That generosity of thinking will outlast us all.

Cantaba en muchos idiomas. Era una artista de verdad, no solo una cantante. El mundo pierde mucho cuando perdemos gente así.
