Elizabeth "Libby" Gibson was a Portland woman remembered by her siblings and friends as kind, creative, and silly, someone who welcomed people with love and acceptance. She was 32 when Multnomah County prosecutors say she died on or about November 18, 2022. Her body has not been recovered. News of the legal case that finally named her death reached a wide audience in September 2026, but the people who loved her had already been living with unanswered questions for years.

Gibson disappeared in November 2022 and was formally reported missing in March 2023. Friends told KATU that, like several other women later linked to the same investigation, she had been experiencing homelessness in the Portland area when she vanished. Those who knew her from earlier years described a special person and a true light, language that sits beside the family's own words about creativity, humor, and openness.

On September 16, 2026, Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez announced that a grand jury had indicted Jesse Calhoun on a charge of manslaughter in the first degree in Gibson's death. Prosecutors said she was likely Calhoun's first victim and that investigators had long been aware of her disappearance but only recently assembled evidence they believed connected him to her presumed death. Calhoun already faced charges in the deaths of five other Portland-area women. He has pleaded not guilty in those cases.

Gibson's siblings asked for privacy while thanking law enforcement and the District Attorney's office. "Our family is grateful that a definitive step toward justice is finally being taken for our sister, Libby," their statement said. "Libby was kind, creative, and silly. She welcomed everyone with love and acceptance. Her future was tragically taken from her way too soon." Advocates working with families in the case urged the public to keep talking about the women themselves, not only about the accused.

This page is a memorial for Elizabeth "Libby" Gibson, not a true-crime dossier. Details of the pending prosecution will be decided in court. What can be said with confidence from public reports is that a sister and friend who made people feel welcome is gone, that those who loved her waited nearly four years for a charging decision in her name, and that they still ask anyone with information about her disappearance or death to contact Portland Police.

In their own words

Libby was kind, creative, and silly. She welcomed everyone with love and acceptance. Her future was tragically taken from her way too soon.

Statement from Gibson's siblings, September 16, 2026

She was a true light in this world. To hear that she's never coming back ... it's just really heartbreaking.

I keep circling back to the same detail, that nobody knew for years. Three years of friends thinking she was just gone, not knowing, and then this indictment comes and gives everyone an answer nobody wanted. Her siblings asked for privacy and I think about that phrase her friend used, a true light, and how ordinary and devastating that is at the same time. She was 32. Edit: I had her age wrong the first time I typed this, 32, not 33.

Reported missing March 2023. They believe she died back in November 2022. Sit with that gap for a second. No body recovered either. Friend said she was a true light, kept using that word, and it stuck with me more than the legal stuff honestly. 32 years old. Just 32.

Met her once at a gallery opening in Atlanta, maybe ten minutes total. She asked good questions about a piece I'd been staring at for too long. Didn't expect to think about that again under circumstances like this.
