Winter Jones was a six-year-old girl from the Memphis area whose death on 13 August 2026 drew national attention to daycare transport safety. Nonverbal and autistic, she was supposed to spend that day at Macon Hall Elementary School in Cordova, Tennessee. Her family dropped her at Kid University daycare for the morning run. After the van returned to the daycare, she remained inside the vehicle for hours in summer heat.
Family members and local outlets reported that she was found unresponsive after being left on the bus. Tennessee Department of Human Services inspection reporting later described violations at the facility connected to the tragedy. Community members held a candlelight vigil in the days that followed.
In September 2026, three former daycare workers - driver Tametria Norry, assistant director Sabrina Powe and assistant Amilya Hardin - were indicted on charges including aggravated child neglect, criminally negligent homicide and tampering with or fabricating governmental records. On 16 September they appeared in court and pleaded not guilty. Bond and hearing schedules were reported by Memphis television stations including Action News 5 and WREG.
