So I didn't even know Steve Luke until I fell into a YouTube hole a few years back looking up old Packers rosters, weird hobby I know, and what got me wasn't the stats really, it was that he started at strong safety and just never left the lineup, all 90 games from 75 to 80, which sounds small until you think about how many guys get hurt or benched or traded before they even get comfortable. Anyway I read he ended up coaching pole vault at ISU, which feels like such a strange second act, and I keep thinking about how many kids he probably taught who had no idea he ever played in the NFL at all. 73 isn't that old. My dad had Tallahassee Lassie on a scratched 45 and played it constantly when I was a kid. Freddy Cannon's voice was just pure energy. Sad to hear he's gone.
