Just read the Le Monde piece about him stopping that hotel complex next to the Pyramids back in 1978. Had no idea one reporter's story could get UNESCO and even Sadat involved. 86 years old, that's a whole life of work most of us never heard of until now.

My mom called me about this one, not because we knew him, just because she'd seen his obituary in the Gresham paper and it stuck with her. Landscaping and gardening his whole life, and taking care of his mother till the end. Something about that made her tear up on the phone and now I'm sitting here in my kitchen abroad feeling it too.

I only found The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed a few years ago, some late night down a rabbit hole of Soviet detective shows, and I didn't even know her name until I looked it up after. There's this scene where her character is holding the baby, I don't know why it hit me the way it did, I think about it more than I probably should. Seventy years old, a whole stage career I knew nothing about apparently, Nastasya Filippovna and all of it, and here I am only knowing the one part. Anyway.
