Didn't know much of his catalog beyond Stay Up Zimbabwe, but that one stuck with me for years, a friend from Trinidad played it at a cookout once and had to explain the whole thing to me. 85 years old. Didn't realize calypso had its own protest singers like that.

My neighbor growing up was from Iloilo and kept Erlinda's old radio dramas on cassette, Sunday dinners always had that voice in the background even if none of us understood the Ilonggo. Found out years later it was the same woman I'd see turn up as somebody's lola in these small Filipino films. 84 and still working. Rest well, Erlinda.

My mother called me at 6am my time to tell me Steve Shepard had died. I've been gone from Augusta almost twenty years and it still hit me like a gut punch. He swore in my cousin at her wedding, back when he was still on the commission, just did it as a favor. That's the kind of guy he was.
