Didn't know much about him until I read the piece on Setif, 1945. Credit where it's due, not every diplomat says the hard thing out loud.

My mother called from Samara this morning, said the whole street knew his name before they knew the plant's. 96. She sounded like she'd lost something of the city itself.

i keep thinking about this all afternoon, not sure why it hit me. found an old clip years ago of the 1970 season, grainy footage, someone had uploaded the whole championship somehow and I watched it for a film thing I was researching, not even about racing really, about privateers, about people who do things alone. and there he was, this Kawasaki against the whole Agostini machine, and he still came second. second in the world. I don't even like motorcycles. I think I watched that clip four or five times that week. anyway. 88 years old. edit: he was from a mining town, Huntly, I looked it up again just now

Saw him coach the reserve squad in '92. Quiet man, but he knew exactly what he wanted. América lost someone who understood the place.

A life inside the costume, a world outside it. Brunier knew the difference.

Pornografia changed how I watched supporting actors. He didn't disappear into the frame. He lived there.

Creem changed everything. Marsh was there at the beginning, arguing with his ears.

Sorry for your loss too, Karl. That clip is still the best introduction to what he could do.
