In their own words

God is like me. Just as he is like you. He is sitting here somewhere beside us, over coffee and lemonade, and he is not lecturing, not pointing a finger at what we should do. He gave us reason for that.

You have touched a sore point. I feel helpless about it. I do not want to, and I cannot, lecture anyone. It embarrasses me, it amuses me, and it irritates me, just as 'our people' and their posture often disappoint me.

My mum had a Cracovia poster from the 80s with him at some match. She never knew he was an actor. Just thought he looked like he belonged there.

My dad was a Cracovia man too, and he loved watching Jan Frycz in those Lupa productions. Said he could see the whole character in how the man stood. Lost a good one.

Kraków childhood

Jan Frycz was born in Kraków on 15 May 1954. He grew up in the city and later told interviewers he had been a Cracovia supporter since childhood, drawn as much to the club's white-and-red colours as to the team. Public sources do not name his parents. The childhood that is documented is civic and theatrical: a Kraków lyceum, then the state drama school, then a stage debut in his home city at 24.

Witkowski Lyceum and the Kraków drama school

He finished August Witkowski Secondary School No. 5 in Kraków, then the Ludwik Solski State Higher School of Theatre (PWST), graduating in 1978. The school is now the AST National Academy of Theatre Arts. Student work already pointed at the Lupa collaboration: he appeared in Lupa's 1977 production of Witkacy's Dainty Shapes and Hairy Apes. He did not take a…

From Fredro to Lupa

The theatre debut was Edmund in Ladies and Hussars (1978) at the Słowacki Theatre. Film began almost accidentally beside that, with Dagny in 1976, then smaller 1980s parts. The discovery that set the career was not a single hit but repertory stamina: Warsaw's National Theatre and Teatr Polski in the early 1980s, then seventeen years at Stary Teatr, then the…

Three marriages, six children, a private man

Wikipedia PL records three wives: Grażyna Laszczyk-Frycz, Agata Frycz, and Małgorzata Frycz. Gabriela, an actress, is the child of the first marriage. Olga, Maria, Michał, Wojciech, and Antoni are the five children of the second. Olga and Gabriela both work as actresses. Małgorzata, a lawyer, was his wife at death and was present at the funeral. Marriage dates are not…

Outside the Church, still asking

Polish Wikipedia notes that in private life he stood outside the Church. In the 2023 Onet interview he said God was like him, and like the interviewer: present, not pointing a finger, because people had been given reason. He said being asked to instruct anyone was a sore point; it embarrassed and irritated him. He was disappointed by 'our people'…

The actor other actors measured themselves against

The National Theatre called him not only a great artist but a friend and, for many, a mentor, and said the company would miss his charisma in rehearsal, his laugh in the corridors, and the long conversations. Jan Englert said it was hard for an older colleague to admit the younger man was more gifted, and that Frycz slipped every…

Orły, Gloria Artis, a last theatre prize

Aleksander Zelwerowicz Award, 1990, for the season's work including Ivan in The Brothers Karamazov. Gdynia Film Festival, 2003, supporting actor, Pornografia. Polish Film Award (Orzeł), Best Supporting Actor: Pornografia (2003 ceremony), The Welts (2004), and 25 Years of Innocence (listed by English Wikipedia as 2021). Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, 2005, for outstanding artistic merit. Silver Medal…

The drinking, the anti-prize, the privacy

Documented trouble, not scandal in the tabloid sense. He said publicly that he had recognised a drinking problem and gone through alcoholism; Polish Wikipedia records that he had been through that illness. The 2015 car accident was reported as serious, with a long return to health. In 2012 the Węże awards, a Polish Razzie-style vote, named his work in Corporate…

15 August 2026, then a state farewell

Jan Frycz died on 15 August 2026, aged 72, at the family home, surrounded by family. The National Theatre in Warsaw announced it on 17 August. He had been at Oresteia rehearsals the previous week. The cause was not stated by the family or the theatre. Press and colleagues described cancer treatment continuing alongside work. The funeral on 7 September 2026 was a state ceremony, secular, beginning at 11:00 in the farewell hall at Powązki Military Cemetery. The urn was buried in the Avenue of the Distinguished at the old Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw. Reported neighbours in that alley include Bogusław Kaczyński and Jerzy Połomski. Culture minister Marta Cienkowska's letter, read at the farewell, said he could make a scene out of silence. Donations were invited for the Home for Veteran Polish Stage Artists in Skolimów.
