My little sister and I used to rush home from school to catch Punky Brewster, and Mike was the teacher I wished I had. Watched it on our basement TV in Scarborough, rewound the theme song more times than I can count. That show got me through a rough year at ten years old.

Just read an old newspaper piece about McNairy County's emergency response and his name was all through it. Strange to see he'd died the same week. 1997 to 2016 as chief deputy is a long stretch to give one county.

My mum rang from Struthers this morning to tell me about Patty. Fifty years married to Edward and she was still sketching at that kitchen table the last time anyone saw her. Only 72.

My uncle had a bootleg VHS of Fargo and we watched it every winter in his basement in Scarborough, the woodchipper scene scaring the life out of me every single time. Years later I found out those snow covered wide shots started as J. Todd Anderson's drawings before anyone ever rolled a camera. Strange to think a stranger's pencil did that to a kid in Toronto.

I only came across this because a friend forwarded me an article about the trial back in the spring, and there was one line I never shook off, that he went eight days without food or water after the fall before anyone flew him out. Nineteen years old. I was out in the garden when I saw the verdict had finally come down, hands full of dirt, and I just sat on the step for a minute not really knowing what to do with it. My aunt had epilepsy, nothing close to what this boy lived with, but I remember what that kind of care does to a household, the way it never lets up. LaFollette was a name I had never heard before this year and I do not think I will forget it now. Rest well, Tanner.

Only read about her this week, a doctor in Dhaka who kept seeing patients while an outbreak was killing people, then it killed her too. 30 years old. Sat with that for a while this morning in the garden.

My dad had the Commonwealth Games on in the background this summer and we both stopped what we were doing when that mixed pairs final went to the tiebreak. He turned 74 that week, same as her, and just kept saying, that's a woman my age. Heard about her passing this morning over coffee and genuinely didn't expect it to hit me like this.

He built something real in Nairobi when there was nothing there. Trained the next wave. And kept his hands in the soil, literally, with the farm. That's a full life.

A child in Moree asking a visiting Labor leader what a Constitution was, then defending a pamphlet to schoolyard bullies by saying she'd be a lawyer one day. And she did. She did the work that mattered.

I read about his case in a business ethics course. The Hotel Africa part stayed with me, how one man's choices ripple through a whole nation. Rest now.
For Mark Rydell · 25 Aug 2026
A man who understood that cinema is about human truth, not spectacle. We needed more directors like him.

What a remarkable woman. From Bethnal Green to television to standing up for her community in Kent. I read she cleaned her way through drama school and never forgot where she came from. That kind of integrity doesn't fade.
