ok so this is random but i follow a lot of environmental journalism accounts for gardening stuff and this name kept popping up this week, Bibhuti Pati, Odisha, 54 years old, cardiac arrest. i didn't know him at all, never heard of him before honestly, but i read that Tehelka piece he did back in 2008 about corruption in some rural scheme and it was just good reporting, the kind where you can tell someone actually went and looked instead of just writing from a desk. anyway i don't really have a personal connection here i just think it's sad when someone spends their whole career digging into stuff that matters to regular people and then it ends like that, sudden, on a Monday morning. rest easy sir i guess, sorry if that's not the right thing to say

Bibhuti Pati was a senior Odia journalist whose career of several decades took him through most of the major newspapers and television channels of Odisha. Known as an independent investigative and environmental reporter, he covered environmental questions, national security and regional politics with an emphasis on reporting from the ground. At the time of his death he was the New Delhi correspondent of the Odia news channel Kanak News. He died on 19 October 2026, aged 54.
Pati began his working life at Eastern Times, an English language weekly published by the Prajatantra Prachar Samiti in Cuttack. He went on to work for Prajatantra and for many of the best known names in Odia journalism, among them Sambad, Samaja, Dharitri, Nakshatra News, Nandighosha TV and finally Kanak News. Many of his interviews and feature articles were published in the Prajatantra weekly magazine and in Rabibar Sambad, the Sunday edition of Sambad.
He also wrote for national publications. Reports of his death noted his work on national and policy subjects for investigative weeklies and magazines, including Tehelka, and in February 2008 he wrote a Tehelka report, Corruption guaranteed, on abuses in the rural employment guarantee scheme in Orissa. Colleagues remembered him as a dedicated reporter with a keen eye for issues on the ground and for investigative work.
His career spanned both print and television, from weeklies and daily newspapers to Odia satellite news channels. Moving between newspapers, magazines and channels, he established himself as a prominent media voice across regional and national news organisations. Pati lived in CDA Sector 10 in Cuttack. He was survived by his wife and their only son.
On the morning of 19 October 2026 he felt severe chest pain while in Bhubaneswar and was taken by private vehicle to Cuttack, where he was brought to SCB Medical College and Hospital. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. Reports said he had suffered a cardiac arrest. Tanaya Patnaik, editor of Sambad and Kanak News, and the Sambad group's news editor Bhabani Shankar Tripathy expressed their grief, and the Union Education Minister and Sambalpur MP Dharmendra Pradhan wrote that Pati's contribution to journalism would always be remembered. His death cast a pall of gloom over the journalists of Odisha.
