My dad used to clip out these little dispatches on Japanese local politics and mail them to me, that's how I first read about Watanabe, the dentist who became mayor of Iwamizawa in 2002. Three terms running that city before Tokyo ever called him. Strange to read the same wire service report years later saying he fell at home and didn't get back up.
