Alla Nani

Alla Kali Krishna Srinivas was born on 30 December 1969 in Eluru, then in West Godavari district, to Alla Surya Chandra Rao and Nagamani. He belonged to the Kapu community and grew up in and around Eluru and Sanivarapu Peta.

He completed SSC at K.P. High School, Ashok Nagar, in 1985 and intermediate at Sir C.R.R. College, Eluru, in 1988. He began higher studies at Andhra University and left before finishing a degree, a detail recorded in both Telugu biographical profiles and local political wikis.

Family life remained centred on Eluru. He married Alla Rekha, also known as Phani Rekha, and the couple raised two sons.

Nani contested Eluru for the Indian National Congress in 1994 and 1999 without success. Persistence paid off in 2004, when he defeated TDP candidate Maradani Ranga Rao by more than thirty thousand votes and entered the Assembly for the first time.

He retained Eluru in 2009 against Badeti Kota Ramarao. Those two terms established him as a constituency politician who knew the city's traders, villages and party booths, and who stayed visible between elections rather than migrating permanently to Hyderabad or Amaravati.

After Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy's death, Congress politics in Andhra Pradesh fractured. In 2013 Nani resigned his Congress seat and membership and joined the YSR Congress Party led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

He lost Eluru in 2014 to Badeti Kota Ramarao but remained in the party organisation, including district leadership, and returned to the legislature in 2017 as an MLC elected on the MLA quota.

In the 2019 Assembly election Nani won Eluru again for the YSRCP by a narrow 4,072-vote margin. On 8 June 2019 he was sworn in as one of five deputy chief ministers, with the Health, Family Welfare and Medical Education portfolio.

His term coincided with COVID-19. He briefed the media on testing, hospital readiness and government safety measures, visited government hospitals, and reviewed district health administration. He left the cabinet in the April 2022 reshuffle but continued as MLA and party organiser until 2024.

Nani contested Eluru again in 2024 and lost to TDP candidate Badeti Radhakrishnaiah. In August 2024 he resigned from the YSRCP, citing political differences after the defeat.

On 13 February 2025 he joined the Telugu Desam Party in the presence of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, a high-profile induction covered by statewide Telugu media. He was not holding office at the time of his death.

Nani's public identity remained tied to Eluru even when he held statewide office. He and Alla Rekha raised two sons, Alla Kali Krishna Manichandra and Alla Ashish, who pursued education in the United States and England.

Supporters remembered him as approachable in constituency work and as a Kapu community figure who kept a local address and local network after cabinet service ended.

On 15 September 2026 Alla Nani suffered a heart attack and died at a private hospital in Visakhapatnam. He was 56.

Andhra Jyothy and other Telugu outlets reported the death the same afternoon. Live television coverage on channels including ABN, NTV and Suman TV carried the news across the state, and Eluru was described as plunged into mourning.

Nani's career traced the turbulent party realignments of coastal Andhra after 2009: Congress MLA, YSRCP organiser and deputy chief minister, then a late switch to the TDP. What stayed constant was Eluru.

As health minister he was one of the public faces of Andhra Pradesh's pandemic response. As a constituency politician he showed that repeated contests, even after defeats, could still rebuild a local majority. His sudden death cut short a career that was still being rewritten in 2025.

Nani presented himself as a constituency-first politician rather than an ideologue. His party journey followed the wider Godavari-region shift from Congress to YSRCP after 2011-2013, then a personal break with Jagan Mohan Reddy's party after the 2024 defeat.

In office he emphasised government health delivery, hospital inspection visits and COVID-19 safety messaging. Outside office he kept Kapu community networks and Eluru district organisation work as the base of his influence.
