Read Lost in Mall on a bus from Jakarta to Bandung, three years ago, trying to understand why my grandmother never talked about the Indies. Changed how I saw the whole trip after that. Didn't know she'd died until my mom texted me just now.

I don't really know how to write this one. Saw a documentary clip of her talking about the kids in France once and it stuck with me for days, 98 years old, that's a whole world gone.

He played for so many teams in Japan. Must have had some real experiences living and working that far from home. Rest in peace, Brian.

My professor at UCLA showed us his work on how Eastern Europe kept trying to catch up to the West and kept getting stuck. He made you feel the weight of that struggle, like it was still happening. He will be missed here in LA.
