Alexey Konstantinovich Vishnevetsky spent almost forty years inside Russian newsrooms, first as a student on a traineeship and last as the man the Russian Union of Journalists sent to tell regional editors what their job still was. He died at 3 in the morning on 4 September 2026. Vladimir Solovyov, chairman of the union, told RIA Novosti that morning that the preliminary cause was a heart attack. He was 60, on his 61st year of life. The union notice called the loss huge and irreplaceable. Solovyov said they had been friends for about forty years, and that Vishnevetsky had been his deputy for about fifteen: five years in the documentary film service of VGTRK, then nearly nine in the union. "Yesterday we were just sitting, discussing our plans, joking together," Solovyov said. "And then this terrible news happened."
He was born in Moscow. Cyclowiki dates the birth 1 November 1965. The official union biography does not print the day, only the city, so that day is cited as Cyclowiki only and is not stored as an established birth date. He finished School No. 209 and in 1982 entered the journalism faculty of Moscow State University. In a later interview with Realnoe Vremya, republished by the Amur branch of the union, he said that on 1 September 1982, one of the first lines he wrote in a notebook was: "A journalist's freedom is the freedom to tell the truth." He added that Leonid Brezhnev was still alive, that the years of stagnation were in full swing, and that he and his classmates did not lie. Military service interrupted the studies. From 1984 to 1986 he served at the school of junior aviation specialists in Vyshny Volochyok and in a training aviation regiment in Tula. In 1987, still a student, he came to the newspaper Moskovskaya Pravda for a traineeship. In 1988 the paper hired him as a freelance correspondent, with social-insurance contributions. He then rose through the desk: deputy responsible secretary, first deputy responsible secretary, responsible secretary, and first deputy editor-in-chief.
From 1994 to 1996 he was responsible secretary of Profi-Sport, a supplement to Rossiyskaya Gazeta. In 1996 he moved to television. He was chief editor of Distantsiya 60 and Segodnyachko on NTV and TNT, and consultant and chief editor of Chestny detektiv (Honest Detective) on Rossiya 1. Later he would tell students who watched old Segodnyachko stories that the pieces still felt modern, and that the studio format of a three-minute talk with a viewer belonged to a slower rhythm than the one television now demanded.
From 2009 to 2012 he was responsible secretary of Parlamentskaya Gazeta. From 2012 to 2017 he was deputy head of the documentary film service at Rossiya 1. In the Realnoe Vremya interview he said he spent five years there as head of the external-production department, that the group released more than a thousand films, and that not one of those films went out with a factual or spelling error, because he had hired a professional proofreader to check facts, titles, and transcripts. The union biography uses the same round number: he took part in the making of about a thousand documentary films, and wrote hundreds of newspaper pieces.
On 1 December 2017 he became deputy chairman of the Russian Union of Journalists, a post a 24 February 2018 interview with Chelyabinsk journalists, published by the union, said had not existed before. Solovyov, he said then, had trusted him with it. They had studied on the same university course. The work after that was the opposite of a Moscow desk job. Regional television recorded him in Kuban, Omsk, Tyumen, and elsewhere, talking about craft, bloggers, digital switchover, and why people still entered the trade for romance and for money. On a Friday, 14 February, year not printed on the union page, he led a master class for RIA Voronezh staff. He told them the literary norm was one, set down by the linguist Ditmar Rozental, that bloggers were feeding Anglicisms and leftover 1990s criminal slang into the press, and that the job of the media was to shield readers from that language. The editor of Voronezhsky Kuryer, Elena Evlakova, summarized his warning: the task of the media includes protecting the Russian language, which he treated as a basis of self-awareness.
He kept teaching. The union said he ran creative workshops at capital universities, including the Moscow State University journalism faculty. In the Realnoe interview he described a workshop of 30, of whom 8 stayed the course. He placed all of them in traineeships, and three were working, two on staff and one on a civil contract. He greeted new students with a motto he repeated on purpose: "Our motto is neither money nor fame. Welcome." He also said money would find them later, after they had worked for a name. He was not soft on the news stream that had grown up around the craft. Twenty-eight identical sites copying one another's news, he said, was not journalism. Telegram channels were an information flood, not a newsroom. Journalism, he said, was first of all a sense of responsibility for what you write, say, and put in public. Two principles, he said, sat in every code he had read: the journalist secures the citizen's right to reliable information, and in any circumstance accuracy matters more than speed. He told the Crocus City Hall attack as a personal example. He was on the road. Telegram jumped. The story of the attackers kept changing. What he wanted was to get home, turn on Rossiya 24, and have the sequence laid out. That, he said, was why people still came to journalists.
On 22 August 2025 he was in the field studio of Astrakhan 24 during the tenth Caspian Media Forum. He told the station that the ethics of journalism do not change, that they existed 100, 200, and 500 years ago, and that professionalism, honesty, the ability to see a hero and open a subject, and the readiness to stand up for justice and restore broken rights still mattered. In 2026 a presidential decree named him Honoured Journalist of the Russian Federation. RIA Novosti and the union both date the honour to that year. Solovyov, speaking on the morning of the death, said the title was not an accident. He had become, Solovyov said, very well known and respected.
The farewell was set for 7 September 2026 at 10:30 at the Church of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin in Petrovsky Park, Krasnoarmeyskaya Street 2A, near Dinamo metro. Burial was set for 13:00 at Troekurovskoye Cemetery, Ryabinovaya Street. RIA Novosti reported that the farewell and funeral service ended there, and that he was buried at Troekurovskoye. The official notices do not name a widow or children. A Cyclowiki infobox lists family names that do not appear in the union death notice or the RIA report. Those names are not stored here as verified relatives, and they are not repeated on this profile.
The public life was not a byline readers outside Russia would know. It was a desk man who climbed Moskovskaya Pravda, a television editor of crime and daily shows, a documentary executive who counted films in the hundreds, and then the travelling deputy of a national journalists' union who told students the motto was neither money nor fame, and told editors that copying a neighbour's site was not the job. Solovyov's last public picture of him is small and precise. They had been making plans, and they had been joking.
