Allen Bailey was an American professional football player who spent ten seasons as a defensive lineman in the National Football League, eight of them with the Kansas City Chiefs and two with the Atlanta Falcons. Known to teammates as Hulk for his size and strength, he was regarded as a dependable, hard-working presence on the defensive line.

He was born on 25 March 1989 on Sapelo Island, a barrier island off the Georgia coast that is reached from the mainland by ferry. He attended McIntosh County Academy in Darien, where he played linebacker and fullback; as a junior he made 138 tackles and ran for four touchdowns. He went on to the University of Miami, where he grew from a special teams player into a defensive end, earning first-team All-ACC honours in 2009 and second-team honours in 2010.

At the 2011 NFL Combine he recorded one of the best vertical leaps of any defensive lineman, and the Chiefs chose him in the third round of the 2011 draft, 86th overall. After a quiet start he broke through in 2014 with 41 tackles and five sacks, earning a four-year contract extension worth 25 million dollars. In the January 2016 playoffs he had two sacks in a 30-0 win over the Houston Texans. A torn pectoral muscle cost him most of 2016, but he returned to start regularly and in 2018 played all 16 games, setting a career high with six sacks and leading the league with four fumble recoveries.

In 2019 he signed with the Atlanta Falcons, playing two seasons before his release in February 2021. Over 133 regular season games he made 248 tackles, 22 sacks, four forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

Bailey died on 20 October 2026, aged 37. According to his brother, Alford Bailey Jr., speaking to TMZ, his wife found him dead at their home in Florida. The family believed he had died of natural causes, but no official cause of death had been confirmed. His former Miami teammate Colin McCarthy was among the first to share the news, and tributes followed from across the football world.

Dad called me at six in the morning my time to tell me, he's been a Chiefs fan since before I was born. Kept saying the bit about growing up on an island with no bridge, having to catch a ferry just to get to school. Mad path to a decade in the NFL.
