I was literally reading about the old European Championships last night and his name was right there, Rome 1974. Strange to see it again today under a death notice. 80 years old.

Angelo Groppelli was an Italian shot putter who won seven national titles in the 1970s, equalled or improved the Italian record three times and competed for Italy at two European Championships. His death in Varese, aged 80, was announced on 14 October 2026.
Groppelli was born in Varese on 12 July 1946. He was introduced to athletics by the coach Gianni Bellorini and threw the discus before turning to the shot put. He began with the local club Biumense, moved to Pro Patria Milano and in 1972 joined Atletica Riccardi Milano, the club with which his name became inseparably linked.
His best years followed. He won the Italian senior outdoor title in 1975, 1978, 1979 and 1980 and the indoor title in 1976, 1979 and 1980, and earned 28 caps for the national team. He represented Italy at the European Championships in Rome in 1974 and Prague in 1978, finishing 17th in qualifying both times, and was tenth at the European Indoor Championships in Milan in 1978. In Bergamo on 3 June 1978 he set an Italian record of 19.20 metres, part of a run of records before the great duels with Marco Montelatici.
His finest throw came on 8 June 1979 in Turin, during an Italy against Poland match, when he passed the 20 metre barrier by three centimetres. His 20.03 metres was still the Riccardi club record 47 years later and ranks among the best Italian throws of all time. At the club's Pasqua dell'Atleta meeting in 1980 he beat Montelatici, Luciano De Santis and a young Alessandro Andrei, the future world record holder.
Groppelli died in Varese. The exact date has not been published: his old club Atletica Riccardi announced his death in the first minutes of 14 October 2026, and his funeral was held that same day in the farewell hall of the crematorium in Varese, so he died on or shortly before that date. No cause of death was given. He was survived by his wife, Maria, his children Giosiana and Alberto and four grandchildren. The Italian athletics federation and its Lombardy committee mourned one of the most decorated throwers in the region's history.
