Ann Elizabeth O'Polka was a longtime small business owner from Hickory Corners, Michigan, who spent more than half a century serving the Gull Lake area through a housecleaning business she built herself, alongside a picture framing business she ran from her home. She was not a public figure in the conventional sense of politics, entertainment or sport. She became known in her community, and to readers who later came across her obituary, for the plain spoken, first person account of her own life that she wrote before her death, in which she described a single, childfree existence as a deliberate and happy choice rather than an accident of circumstance.
She was born on June 23, 1951, the fourth of five children of Edward J. O'Polka and Leona (Janicki) O'Polka. She grew up attending Moon School before graduating from Muskegon High School in 1969, and as a teenager and young adult she worked at Sealed Power Corporation in Muskegon. In her early twenties she moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan, looking for, in her own description, a broader view of life.
In Kalamazoo she worked several jobs before opening her own housecleaning business, which went on to serve clients around the Gull Lake area for more than fifty years. She also ran a picture framing operation out of her home. She never married and had no children, a path she said she chose deliberately early in adulthood and never regretted. In the late 1980s she moved to a farmhouse on ten acres in Hickory Corners, Michigan, a rural community in Barry County, where she lived for the rest of her life and where, over the following decades, she planted several hundred trees on her property.
Her life mattered to the people who knew her as a portrait of contentment lived on her own terms, outside the expectations placed on women of her generation to marry and raise children. The obituary she wrote for herself, published through Langeland Family Funeral Homes, framed her singleness and childlessness not as something to be pitied but as a freedom she had chosen and valued for more than five decades.
Ann Elizabeth O'Polka died in October 2026 at the age of 75. Her own account states that she died on the afternoon of Saturday, October 3, 2026, while her official obituary and public records list October 4, 2026 as her date of death. People Forever has not been able to resolve this small discrepancy and notes it here for accuracy. A cause of death has not been made public. She was remembered by her family and community in an obituary that asked readers to encounter her story as though she were speaking it aloud to them.
