Antonio Grimau, born Antonio Rebolini, was an Argentine actor whose career on stage, screen and television lasted more than six decades. He first won the public as a romantic lead in the telenovelas of the 1970s and early 1980s, became one of the great villains of Argentine television in the 2000s, and late in life won wide acclaim for playing the singer Sandro in the miniseries Sandro de América.

He was born on 10 March 1944 in Remedios de Escalada, in the Lanús district of Buenos Aires Province. He lost both his parents at 13 and grew up under the guardianship of an older brother, working in a bazaar, on building sites and in a pasta factory while still at technical school. At 16 he answered a newspaper advertisement placed in Clarín by the Teatro Charles Chaplin in Almagro, which was looking for actors for a Brecht play. A friend who went with him lost his nerve at the door; Grimau went in and stayed four years. He later trained with Juan Carlos Gené, whom he regarded as a central influence.

From the late 1960s he worked steadily in television, in El bulín, Rolando Rivas, taxista, Dos a quererse and Dulce Anastasia, and Trampa para un soñador, with Cristina Alberó in the early 1980s, became a major hit. His first major film role came in Daniel Tinayre's La Mary (1974), opposite Susana Giménez and Carlos Monzón, and his more than 20 films included Caballos salvajes (1995) and Angélica (2020). In 1990 Alberto Ure cast him in Los invertidos at the Teatro San Martín, a turning point that showed his range beyond the leading man.

In the 2000s he was cast again and again as the antagonist, in Soy gitano, Padre Coraje, Hombres de honor, Se dice amor, Mujeres de nadie, Vidas robadas and Herencia de amor, and he won a Martín Fierro award for his supporting work in Valientes. In 2018 he played the adult Roberto Sánchez in Adrián Caetano's Sandro de América, which brought him the Martín Fierro for lead actor in a miniseries. The theatre remained his first love, with more than 50 productions from Hamlet to Hello, Dolly!, and in 2005 the Argentine Actors Association and the national Senate gave him the Podestá award for an honourable career.

Grimau died in Buenos Aires on the night of Monday 19 October 2026, aged 82, at the María Ferrer respiratory hospital, where he had been admitted several days earlier. He had been living with interstitial lung disease, and his death was announced on 20 October by the Argentine Actors Association, which said his work formed part of the history of Argentine entertainment. He was still working in 2026, appearing in Vamo' los pibes at the Multiteatro.

My mom called me about this at like 6am her time, said the guy who played Sandro died. I didn't grow up on the telenovelas but Sandro de America was the thing that got my abuela watching TV again in 2018. 82 years old, more than six decades working. That's a career.

He went to the audition with a friend, who turned back at the door. Grimau went in, was handed a monologue to learn in half an hour, and stayed with the company for four years. He later recalled that the theatre opened up music, books and culture to him and, in his words, saved his life. He trained further with the actor and director Juan Carlos Gené and joined the Argentine Actors Association in 1970.
