Archibald Lee Barringer was a North Carolina veteran, contractor and longtime community volunteer who died on October 15, 2026, in Leland, North Carolina, at the age of 86. He was born on March 15, 1940, in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina, to Dr. Archibald Barringer and Mary Evans Foil Barringer, and he was not a celebrity in the conventional sense but a private citizen whose life of service to his country, his trade and his neighbors earned him deep affection in the communities where he lived and worked.
After growing up in Mount Pleasant, Barringer spent six years in the United States Army, during which he was stationed in Turkey and worked as a cryptographer, a role that required discretion and technical skill during the Cold War era. Following his military service he built a long career as a general contractor, working extensively around Charlotte before later taking on projects in Wilmington and Southport, North Carolina. Colleagues and clients remembered him for the integrity and craftsmanship he brought to his work over several decades in the building trade.
Barringer's public reputation rested less on his profession than on his decades of volunteer service. He was a devoted Boy Scout leader for many years, guiding young people in his community, and in his later years he became active with Lions Clubs in the Wilmington area, taking on leadership roles and continuing a lifelong habit of civic involvement. Those who knew him describe a man defined by generosity and quiet dedication rather than public recognition.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother, Robert Barringer. He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Delores Countryman Barringer, his sons Mark Barringer and Duncan Barringer and Duncan's wife April, and his grandson Jaxon Barringer.
Barringer died peacefully on October 15, 2026, in Leland, North Carolina, where he had made his home. No cause of death has been made public. His family has asked that memorial gifts be directed to the Boys and Girls Homes of North Carolina in Lake Waccamaw rather than flowers, reflecting the same spirit of service that marked his volunteer work with young people throughout his life.
