Arnaldo Coen was a Mexican painter, sculptor and multidisciplinary artist associated with the Generación de la Ruptura, the mid-century circle that opened Mexican art beyond the muralist tradition. His wife, the gallerist Lourdes Sosa, announced that he died in Mexico City on 8 November 2026, at the age of 86. The Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura said his experimental vocation had widened the links among painting, space and music, and had left a mark on later generations of artists.
He was born in Mexico City on 10 June 1940. His mother was an opera singer and his father a musicologist, and music remained close to his work throughout his life. At sixteen he met Diego Rivera, who encouraged him to keep painting and researching rather than enrol in an art school. Between 1957 and 1962 he trained and worked in graphic design with Gordon Jones. In 1958 he entered the studio of the American painter Lawrence Calcagno, where he worked into 1960 and began to experiment with abstract expressionism.
His first solo exhibition, De los Conventos a la ópera, opened at Galería Mer Kup in 1963 and showed figurative expressionism. The following year, at Galería Juan Martín, he moved into fantastic expressionism. A French government grant took him to Paris in 1967. In 1968 he was a founding member of the Salón Independiente. He made the mural El hombre ante el espejo de la violencia for Mexico's pavilion at Expo 70 in Osaka, and in 1971 helped stage Prometeo Espectáculo Pop at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. In 1972, with Gelsen Gas and Juan José Gurrola, he conceived Robarte el arte, an intervention filmed at Documenta 5 in Kassel.
His later painting moved through hard-edge colour, the female torso treated as object and sculpture, and the Mutaciones series of 1974, landscapes organised around the hexagrams of the I Ching. From those ideas he made artist's books, including Jaula, a graphic score honouring John Cage, made with Mario Lavista. With Eduardo Terrazas he assembled Sin saber que existías y sin poderte explicar (1975) from objects salvaged in Mexico City's historic centre. Between 1977 and 1978 he joined architects working on designs for Tanzania's new capital, Dodoma. Museum surveys followed: A la orilla del tiempo at the Museo de Arte Moderno in 1986, with a book that included Octavio Paz, and Versiones y perversiones at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 1990.
He became a numbered member of the Academia de Artes on 26 September 2010 and a titular member of the Seminario de Cultura Mexicana. Mexico awarded him the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes in 2014, and in December 2022 INBAL presented him with the Medalla Bellas Artes in the visual arts. He thanked Sosa then as the companion of more than thirty years and the co-author of almost everything he had done. In 2023 the Museo de Arte Moderno mounted Arnaldo Coen. Reflejo de lo invisible, a survey of 322 works. Walking through it he told El Economista that he saw a whole career of searching and of finding freedom. In January 2026 he was still showing new sculpture and assemblage in Memoria / Cuerpo / Metamorfosis at the Seminario de Cultura Mexicana.
Sosa said he had set out on a new journey and that his free spirit now merged with the mystery of existence that had always fascinated him. The cause of his death was not made public. His remains were to be received at a funeral home on Félix Cuevas in Mexico City.
