For Gamal Nkrumah · 10d ago

honestly i don't know what to say. i only knew him through old Al-Ahram pieces i read for a history class but his byline stuck with me, 68 is no age

For Hasan M. El-Shamy · 17d ago

found Folktales of Egypt in the stacks at my university library sophomore year, just needed a source for a history paper and ended up reading half of it in one sitting. my professor mentioned today that El-Shamy had passed, 88 years old. didn't know him, just grateful for the book.

For George Fenton · 19d ago

My mom and I used to watch The Blue Planet on repeat when I was like ten, Carolina summer, AC broken, and that music made it feel like the ocean was right there in the living room. Didn't know his name till today.

For Alfred Tyrone Cooke · 18 Sept 2026

87 is a long life and he spent part of it doing something most people can't imagine, going up against six Sabres over Kalaikunda in 1965. Thinking of his wife and two sons tonight.

For Tara Singh Varma · 14 Sept 2026

She got 13,000 preference votes from her community in 1998. That's not nothing. People knew what she stood for.

For Archibald "Archie" MacKinnon · 9 Sept 2026

Read about the Cinderella Four in a business history class last year and couldn't stop thinking about how he went to UBC just to row. That kind of single-minded focus, and then to actually win gold. Canada's first. The whole trajectory from a lake rowboat with his mom to Olympic gold is just remarkable.

For Silvia Ederra · 8 Sept 2026

I found out about Silvia through a sports history class project on European handball. The way she came back at 39 after everything her body had been through, that stuck with me. Rest easy, La Roca.

For Tadeusz Kasyanov · 4 Sept 2026

Master of Sport in boxing, 10th dan in karate, and he still showed up to teach. Born and died in Moscow doing what he believed in.

That's a good thing for a mother to pass on, the training not just the news.
