Barry Daines was an English goalkeeper who spent more than a decade at Tottenham Hotspur, most of it as the patient understudy to the great Pat Jennings. When his chance finally came he played every league match of the 1977 to 1978 season as Spurs won promotion back to the First Division at the first attempt. He died in November 2026 at the age of 75, and Tottenham announced his death on 8 November.

Barry Raymond Daines was born on 30 September 1951 in Witham, Essex. He joined Tottenham as an apprentice and turned professional in September 1969, and he also represented England at youth level.

For years his route to the first team was blocked by Jennings, the Northern Ireland international then regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Daines made his league debut in November 1971 in a 3-2 win over West Bromwich Albion at White Hart Lane, and he was a substitute in both legs of the 1972 UEFA Cup Final, which Tottenham won. He made only occasional appearances for several seasons, standing in when Jennings was injured, until an ankle injury to Jennings gave him 19 league games in 1976 to 1977.

In the summer of 1977, after Tottenham's relegation, manager Keith Burkinshaw let Jennings go to Arsenal and handed the goalkeeper's shirt to Daines. He played in all 42 league games in 1977 to 1978 as Spurs returned to the top flight, and was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the Second Division. He remained first choice for much of the next three seasons, but injury and the arrival of Milija Aleksic and then Ray Clemence ended his time at the club. Tottenham gave him a testimonial in May 1981, a 3-2 defeat by West Ham United at White Hart Lane. In all he made 146 league appearances for the club.

Daines then played in the Hong Kong First Division for Bulova SA from 1981 to 1983, before finishing his professional career with 21 appearances for Mansfield Town and a spell at Chelmsford City. After football he became a supermarket manager in Essex.

Tottenham Hotspur said on 8 November 2026 that everyone at the club was deeply saddened to learn of his passing, aged 75, and sent their thoughts and love to his family and friends. The cause of death was not made public.

75 is no age. Never saw him play, didn't grow up with football even, but read the Spurs announcement this morning and it stuck with me. Hope his family are being looked after right now.

For several seasons he appeared only when Jennings was injured. A serious ankle injury to Jennings in 1976 to 1977 gave Daines 19 league games, but Tottenham were relegated at the end of that season. That summer manager Keith Burkinshaw released Jennings, who joined Arsenal, and Daines became first choice.

He played all 42 league games in 1977 to 1978 as Tottenham were promoted from the Second Division at the first attempt, clinched with a 0-0 draw at Southampton on the final day, and he was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the division. He stayed first choice for much of the following three seasons, with 32 league appearances in 1979 to 1980, until injuries and the arrival of Milija Aleksic and Ray Clemence ended his Spurs career. His last appearance for the club was a 1-0 defeat at Wolves in April 1981. Tottenham awarded him a testimonial, played in May 1981, which West Ham United won 3-2 at White Hart Lane. He made 146 league appearances for the club.

From 1981 to 1983 he played in Hong Kong for Bulova SA, then returned to England to make 21 league appearances for Mansfield Town in 1983 to 1984, and later had a spell with Chelmsford City.

Personal life
