Silvia Ederra Urra was born in Estella, Navarra, on 8 September 1983, and died there on 8 September 2026, her 43rd birthday. Spanish handball knew her as La Roca, the pivot who spent more than two decades in the elite and built a career in the least glamorous square of the court: the six-metre line, in front of her own goal and in front of the other one.
She started at eight, at school in Lizarra, because her sister, two years older, was already playing. Multisport at Colegio Nuestra Señora del Puy gave way to handball, and Itxako, the club of her town, became the place she later called home. In a 2016 Calle Mayor interview she said that without Itxako she would be nothing, because that was where she grew as a player and as a person. She absorbed what she saw. She stayed associated with the club for fourteen seasons, won a junior European bronze with Spain in Finland, and then, still young, left home for the first time.
Two seasons at Mar Alicante taught her maturity and, by her account, helped that club into a European competition for the first time. Two seasons at Castro Urdiales took her to one of the best stretches of her career, and to the door of the senior national team, until a car crash on 22 February 2011. She needed surgery for a disc hernia. Doctors, she said, were not optimistic even about an ordinary life, and they told her she had lost a lot of strength in her legs. She thought the career was over. She did not stop. After rehabilitation, including time back with Itxako, Sporting La Rioja gave her half a season to find out whether she could be a player again. She could. In July 2012 she signed for Balonmano Bera Bera in Donostia.
The San Sebastian years were the titles. All of her senior silverware came there: five Liga titles, three Copas de la Reina and five Supercopas de España, counted by Spanish Wikipedia as 13 club titles. She played EHF Cup, Cup Winners' Cup and Champions League. In 2013, after a Copa de la Reina final, national coach Jorge Dueñas called her into a senior camp. Spanish Wikipedia records a 2013 senior debut, three caps and one goal. She told Calle Mayor she would work and work ("currar y currar") to keep the place. In 2016 Estella named her Estrella del Deporte, her third nomination. She put the prize in the middle of the table at her parents' house and said she owed it to them and to her sister.
In May 2018 Bera Bera told her they wanted a younger pivot who played both defence and attack. She had nearly 200 matches and close to 300 goals in Donostia, and she called the release the thorn she could not pull: she had wanted to finish at Bidebieta. She accepted it as sport, said she was not superstitious, and hoped a 13th title would be a decent number to leave on. She did not retire. A November 2018 interview for Deporte Cien Por Cien, by then at Sporting in the second tier, carried the line she meant: she would retire when she decided, or when her body shouted for it. She spoke then about a collapsed Hungarian offer, about wanting girls to see values off the court as well as on it, and about Ambros Martín, who had coached her at Itxako, as the best coach she had known.
The first public goodbye came on 11 August 2020. After 28 years in the sport, 20 of them professional, she said the pandemic season had made it the moment to change her life, give time to herself and to "los míos", and face working life. She thanked trainers, teammates, fans, and "mi familia y mi pareja", her faithful followers in the bad moments especially. The name of that partner was not published.
The goodbye did not hold. In January 2023, at 39, she pulled the shirt on again for Grafometal Sporting La Rioja, to add experience and help the side stay up. She told Noticias de Navarra she wanted a Navarrese team in the top division. In August 2024 an ovarian cyst, at first mistaken for digestion or work stress, led her sister and parents to push her into gynaecology emergency care. She was operated on 19 August 2024. She said she was dancing in the room by the third day, was medically cleared on 20 September, and was soon playing again, including a Copa de la Reina tie against Oviedo. She called it a hard blow and called herself lucky: the tumour was cleared and she did not need further treatment. She was careful not to claim that everyone had the same luck. By May 2025 a review was still going well. She retired for good that month, after about 30 years on court, leaving Sporting in the top flight, Liga Guerreras Iberdrola. She said she could have continued, but it was time to let a new generation through, and that handball wages would not secure a future. Her own message, carried by the club, asked people to remember her when they heard the six-metre line.
On 8 September 2026 clubs and federations confirmed that she had died at 43 after a long illness. Diario de Navarra, Marca, ABC and EFE used that phrase and did not publish a medical cause. Sporting La Rioja wrote that some people stay in a club's history and in the hearts of those who walked with them, and that she would always have a place there. balonmano.info remembered the blocks, the resin, the chats with younger players, and called her the great captain of the six metres. A specific cause of death, a hospital, a funeral date and a resting place were not made public in the sources used here.
She left a business degree from the Public University of Navarre and an online master's in marketing and distribution channels from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. She wanted the court and the working life both. What she asked to be remembered by was narrower: the six-metre line, and the people who had been standing there with her.
