Arnaud Denis was a French actor, stage director, and playwright whose career was rooted in classical theatre companies and Paris stages. Born on 31 May 1983 in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, he discovered theatre early. From age five he made marionette shows, inspired by street performances he saw near the Champ-de-Mars. At the bilingual École Jeannine Manuel he first stepped on stage at fifteen as Mascarille in Molière's Les Précieuses ridicules. Holiday classes with Jean-Laurent Cochet and Jean Périmony sharpened his craft. After the baccalauréat he continued with Cochet, who urged him to direct as well as act, then briefly entered the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique in Dominique Valadié's class.

Two formative years in New Jersey with the French Woods Festival of the Performing Arts followed. There he performed Hamlet and Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest in English. The American repertory experience strengthened his desire to build a lasting French company. In 2003, at twenty, he founded Les Compagnons de la Chimère with friends from Cochet's classes, naming the troupe after Gaston Baty's Cartel-era company. Jean-Pierre Leroux served as administrative and artistic partner. Over fifteen years Denis directed and acted in Ionesco's La Cantatrice chauve, Molière's Les Fourberies de Scapin, Dom Juan and Les Femmes savantes, and Voltaire's L'Ingénu. In 2008 the company received the Fondation de France's Prix Oulmont. In 2009 Denis won the Prix du Brigadier for his staging and performance in Les Femmes savantes, sharing the stage with his mentor Cochet.

He wrote as well as directed. Autour de la folie (2011) wove texts by Maupassant, Flaubert and others into a solo evening. Nuremberg, la fin de Goering (first staged around 2012, revived 2016) and Le Personnage désincarné (Théâtre de la Huchette, 2016; published by Librairie théâtrale) extended his authorship. Screen and television work remained secondary to the stage: appearances included the films Vivre! (2009) and Yves Saint Laurent (2014), and television credits such as Monsieur Max, Elles et moi and Candice Renoir.

Critical recognition widened in the late 2010s. In 2018 he was nominated for the Molière Award for Theatrical Revelation as Jean Moulin in Jean Moulin, évangile at Théâtre 14. In 2020 his production of Marie des Poules, gouvernante chez George Sand, opposite Béatrice Agenin, won the Molière for Best Show in a Private Theatre; he dedicated the prize to Cochet, who had died weeks earlier, saying the little he knew he owed to his own ignorance, but the little he had learned he owed to Cochet. He was also nominated that year for Best Director of a Private Theatre Show. In 2021 he staged Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest at Théâtre Hébertot with Olivier Sitruk and Évelyne Buyle.

In 2023 he co-founded Académie Aparté in Paris with Charles Bonnier, Axel Blind and Delphine Depardieu, a professional school for actors. The same year he adapted and directed Les Liaisons dangereuses after Choderlos de Laclos at Lyon's Théâtre Tête d'Or, playing Valmont opposite Depardieu's Merteuil. The production transferred in 2024 to the Comédie des Champs-Élysées, earning the Prix du Syndicat de la critique (Prix Laurent-Terzieff) and further Molière nominations, including for his direction, plus a SACD prize for adaptation.

In July 2023 a right inguinal hernia repair with a polypropylene mesh implant at Clinique Ambroise-Paré in Paris began a medical ordeal. Infection and severe pain followed. French surgeons, he said, were not prepared to explant the device, so in 2024 he travelled to the United States for removal at high personal cost. Symptoms persisted: myalgic encephalomyelitis (chronic fatigue syndrome), ASIA syndrome features, muscle wasting, tinnitus, vision loss and inability to eat normally. He gathered nearly 700 testimonies from other hernia-mesh patients and spoke publicly about seeking euthanasia in Belgium. In early 2026 he filed a criminal complaint against persons unknown; Medtronic's patient information failures were denounced by his counsel. The Paris prosecutor dismissed the complaint on 31 August 2026.

On 22 September 2026 Denis was euthanised in Namur, Belgium, aged 43. In a final Facebook message he wrote that he was finished with medical mistreatment and called euthanasia a deliverance after three interminable years. French and Belgian media reported the death the same day. Colleagues remembered a classical craftsman who built companies, trained younger actors, and kept returning to Molière, Wilde and Laclos with clarity and cruelty in equal measure.

43. That's the number that's stopping me this morning. I only knew Arnaud Denis through a clip of Les Liaisons dangereuses someone posted years ago, but I looked him up after and followed the hernia mesh advocacy since. Thinking of his family and everyone he was still fighting for.

Personal life

Denis kept his private family life largely out of the public record. No spouse or children were publicly documented in major obituaries. His professional family included mentor Jean-Laurent Cochet, Compagnons partners such as Jean-Pierre Leroux, and Académie Aparté co-founders Charles Bonnier, Axel Blind and Delphine Depardieu. Beliefs and views

Denis argued that classical texts give young companies fertile ground and that actors must not let vanity stand between text and audience. He valued doubt as a tool for craft. He gathered hundreds of patient testimonies and framed his complaint as a last act for others who could not speak.

Legacy and impact

Denis left a body of classical stagings, original plays, and a training school. Les Compagnons de la Chimère and Académie Aparté extended his belief in troupe continuity and actor education. Awards from the Brigadier jury, the Molières and the Syndicat de la critique marked peer recognition. Controversies

Denis's public campaign over hernia-mesh injuries and his pursuit of euthanasia in Belgium sparked debate on informed consent, device regulation and cross-border end-of-life law. He filed a complaint against persons unknown alleging involuntary injury; prosecutors dismissed it on 31 August 2026, which he and his counsel condemned.
