Just finished Kaapi Squad last night with my wife, we don't usually watch Malayalam shows but a friend sent the link and we got hooked by episode three. Read this morning he died two days after it premiered, 27 years old. Said a prayer for his wife Athira before church. That's all I've got.

Belraj Kalarickal was a young Malayalam filmmaker from Manimala in Kerala's Kottayam district whose first independent directing project, the JioHotstar web series Kaapi Squad (also written Kappi Squad and Kaappi Squad), began streaming on 15 October 2026. Two days later, on Saturday 17 October 2026, he was found dead in Kochi. He was 27 according to Cinema Express, Moneycontrol and The Times of India, and 28 according to Manorama News, Asianet News and Deshabhimani.
Belraj grew up in the Kalarickal family of Manimala. His father, G. Suresh, is a former district committee member of the Karshaka Sangham farmers' organisation and a member of the CPI(M) Vazhoor area committee, according to Deshabhimani. His mother, Smitha, works with the Vellavoor cooperative bank, and his sister, K. S. Soja, is associated with UC College in Aluva. Details of his own schooling and film training were not made public in the reports that followed his death.
He learned filmmaking on the job. Over several years he worked as an assistant director and associate director on Malayalam feature films including Nizhal, Madhuram and Dakini. Cinema Express reported that he assisted filmmaker and actor Rahul Riji Nair on Dakini, Keedam and Kho Kho. He was also one of the founding members of First Print Studios, the Rahul Riji Nair production house associated with the award-winning feature Ottamuri Velicham and the web series Kerala Crime Files. Asianet News reported that he was one of the administrators of Movie Street, a film discussion community on Facebook.
Kaapi Squad was his step up to the director's chair. The comedy drama, created by Srikanth Mohan and produced by Rahul Riji Nair under the First Print Studios banner, stars singer and actor Rinosh George with Anagha Ajith, Diya Deepan, Joel Joseph and Abhirami Dayanandan. It follows four young people, their friendship and their entrepreneurial dreams around a cafe. The first four episodes went live on JioHotstar on 15 October 2026, with new episodes planned every Thursday, and shooting for all 36 episodes had already been completed. Malayalam outlets reported that the series was drawing a good audience response in its first days.
His personal life had also just entered a new chapter. In September 2026 he married Athira Bindu Sabu after a six-year relationship. On 29 September he shared photographs from their wedding reception, writing that six years earlier he had replied to a message and ended up hitting the jackpot. It was reported as his last social media post.
On the morning of 17 October 2026 Belraj did not respond when colleagues tried to wake him in Kakkanad, Kochi, where he had been staying with Kaapi Squad show director Srikanth Mohan. Most reports said he was found dead in a hotel room after repeated doorbell rings went unanswered; Deshabhimani described an apartment near the Padamugal Satellite Township, where friends found him unconscious and rushed him to hospital, where he died. Metro Vaartha reported that he had felt unwell on the shooting set shortly before and had gone back to rest. His body was taken to Sunrise Hospital and then moved for a postmortem. Preliminary reports suggested a heart attack, but the exact cause had not been officially confirmed.
Tributes came quickly. JioHotstar Malayalam wrote, "Some goodbyes come far too soon. Rest in peace, Belraj Kalarickal," adding that he had brought Kaapi Squad to life. Rahul Riji Nair and First Print Studios called him their dear brother and guiding light, the powerhouse of their creative team, and said the studio would always remain incomplete without him. The FEFKA Directors' Union also expressed condolences, and production controller Badusha was among the industry figures who publicly mourned him.
According to Deshabhimani, his body was kept at the TMM Hospital mortuary in Kodungoor and will be brought to the family home on the evening of Sunday 18 October 2026, with the funeral to be held at the family home compound at 11 am on Monday 19 October 2026. He is survived by his wife Athira, his parents Suresh and Smitha, and his sister Soja. For many in Malayalam cinema, his story became a painful symbol of a career and a marriage that had only just begun.
