Betty McGuire was an American actress whose career ran for about seventy years, from the original casts of 1950s Broadway musicals to guest roles on many of the best known American television series of the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. Television audiences knew her best as Kate Malone, the mother of Joanna Kerns' character Maggie Seaver, on the ABC sitcom Growing Pains.

She was born on 20 March 1926 in Bridgeport, Connecticut. On Broadway she performed and understudied in the original productions of three musicals: Plain and Fancy in 1955 and 1956, Happy Hunting with Ethel Merman in 1956 and 1957, and Oh, Captain! in 1958. Her Broadway colleagues included Merman, Barbara Cook, Bea Arthur and Tony Randall. She went on to headline as Mame at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and elsewhere, and starred in regional, national and Australian touring productions of Gypsy, Oliver!, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying and The Ziegfeld Follies of 1956, working alongside Tallulah Bankhead, Celeste Holm, Susan Hayward, Constance Bennett, Jane Russell and Ron Moody.

On screen she became a familiar character actress. In 1978 she played Sister Mary Quacker in Cheech and Chong's Up in Smoke and a nurse in Michael Crichton's medical thriller Coma, starring Genevieve Bujold. She later appeared in The Incredible Shrinking Woman (1981) and Wishmaster (1997). Her television credits included The Doris Day Show, Cannon, Columbo, Barnaby Jones, Baretta, Charlie's Angels, Lou Grant, Hill Street Blues, Moonlighting, St. Elsewhere, Falcon Crest, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Murphy Brown, ER and 7th Heaven. On Growing Pains she played Kate Malone in 12 episodes between 1986 and 1991, appearing in all but one of the show's seven seasons, with Gordon Jump as her husband, Ed.

Away from acting she spent years volunteering as a receptionist and advocate for the Coalition for Economic Survival, a Los Angeles legal clinic that supports low income tenants facing eviction. From 2017 she lived at the Motion Picture and Television Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, where she hosted and produced her own talk show, GabFest, for the campus station, Channel 22. Rather than interviewing celebrity residents, she used it to tell the life stories of the staff. She was featured in a 2019 NBC Nightly News report on the home.

My mum called me in the middle of the night to tell me about the Growing Pains grandma. Hundred years old. Didn't know what to say.
