Chinnasaamy Periyamaya, known professionally as Bharathiraja, was an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter and actor whose rural dramas reshaped Tamil cinema across nearly five decades. Born on 17 July 1941 in Allinagaram in what is now Theni district of Tamil Nadu, he died in Chennai on 10 June 2026 at the age of 84 after a prolonged period of age-related illness. Audiences and peers often called him Iyakkunar Imayam, an honorific meaning the pinnacle of directors.

He made his feature debut in 1977 with 16 Vayathinile, a rural romantic drama starring Kamal Haasan, Sridevi and Rajinikanth. Shot largely on location rather than on studio sets, the film helped shift Tamil cinema toward village stories told with naturalistic casting and less cosmetic artifice. He followed that breakthrough with a run of acclaimed titles through the late 1970s and 1980s, including the psychothriller Sigappu Rojakkal, the formally adventurous Nizhalgal, and rural works such as Alaigal Oivathillai, Mann Vasanai and Muthal Mariyathai. He also launched or boosted the early careers of performers including Karthik, Radha, Revathi, Radhika and Vijayashanti.

National recognition followed across four decades. Bharathiraja won six National Film Awards, among them Best Feature Film in Telugu for Seethakoka Chilaka (1982), Best Feature Film in Tamil for Muthal Mariyathai (1986) and Anthimanthaarai (1996), Best Film on Other Social Issues for Vedham Pudhithu (1988), Best Film on Family Welfare for Karuththamma (1995), and Best Screenplay for Kadal Pookkal (2001). He also received four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, a Nandi Award, and the Padma Shri from the Government of India in 2004. Later rural dramas such as Kizhakku Cheemayile connected with new audiences in the 1990s.

He married Chandraleela in 1974. They had two children, actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja (who died in March 2025) and daughter Janani. After falling ill in late December 2025 and periods of hospital care in Chennai, he died of complications on 10 June 2026. Tamil Nadu accorded him full state honours; he was laid to rest at his farmhouse near Devadanapatti in Theni district on 11 June 2026. He is survived by his wife and daughter.

His parents are named in biographical accounts as K. Periyamaya Thevar and Karuthammal. He grew up in a rural Tamil milieu that later supplied the settings, dialects and social textures of his best-known films.

Before directing features he worked in Tamil cinema as an assistant, learning craft on sets that were still dominated by studio interiors and urban melodrama. That apprenticeship and his Theni roots together shaped the location-shot rural aesthetic he brought to his 1977 debut.

Career

Bharathiraja's first feature, 16 Vayathinile (1977), starred Kamal Haasan, Sridevi and Rajinikanth in a rural romance shot predominantly on location. Its success encouraged a wider turn in Tamil cinema toward village narratives. He quickly showed range with Sigappu Rojakkal and Nizhalgal before returning to rural romance and social drama in films such as Alaigal Oivathillai, Mann Vasanai and Muthal Mariyathai.…

He quickly showed range with Sigappu Rojakkal and Nizhalgal before returning to rural romance and social drama in films such as Alaigal Oivathillai, Mann Vasanai and Muthal Mariyathai. Casting without heavy cosmetics and choosing heroines outside the then-dominant fair-skinned ideal became part of his public reputation.

He directed work in Telugu and Hindi as well as Tamil. National Film Awards recognised Seethakoka Chilaka, Muthal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu, Karuththamma, Anthimanthaarai and the screenplay of Kadal Pookkal. Commercial rural hits of the 1990s, including Kizhakku Cheemayile, extended his audience. The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri in 2004, and he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from Sathyabama University in 2005. Over a career spanning 1977 to 2026 he remained identified with realistic portrayals of rural Tamil Nadu.

Bharathiraja is widely credited with helping move Tamil cinema from studio-bound urban melodrama toward location-shot stories of rural life. The honorific Iyakkunar Imayam reflects that standing among directors. He is also remembered for launching actors and for preferring naturalistic faces and village speech on screen. Films such as 16 Vayathinile, Muthal Mariyathai, Vedham Pudhithu and Karuththamma remain reference points in discussions of Tamil rural cinema.
