Bruce Swayze

Bruce Andrew Swayze was born on April 7, 1939, in Kirkland Lake, Ontario (Wikipedia and Slam Wrestling list April 7, 1940). He came out of Hamilton's wrestling community, training at Jack Wentworth's gym after amateur school wrestling and hockey. Wentworth ran Thursday night gym shows that gave students ring time. Swayze debuted as a professional in 1958 while still employed at a Hamilton steel mill, traveling on weekends to Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Detroit before going full time about 1968.

In Detroit for Bert Ruby, Swayze worked under a mask with other young talents including Ivan Koloff, Terry Yorkston and Johnny Powers. In Buffalo for Pedro Martinez he helped form the Love Brothers heel trio with Johnny Evans and Wes Hutchins, wrestling and managing as Beautiful Bruce. As the Black Baron he managed Abdullah the Butcher, Crusher Verdu, the Samoans and others. He also worked National Wrestling Federation dates in Cleveland from about 1970, Florida, the Carolinas, Calgary (Stampede) and Memphis.

He stepped back from full time wrestling in the late 1970s and early 1980s (Wikipedia lists retirement about 1978) and still took occasional spot shows into 1988 while promoting charity events around Kentucky. Friends including Gene Petit and Bill Watts remembered him as even tempered on the road and a stabilizing partner for wilder characters such as Eric the Red.

Swayze married into the family that ran Alliance Rubber Band Company and left the road to work in sales for the firm, finding that closet wrestling fans remembered his ring name. He remained close to Love Brothers partner Johnny Evans, who introduced him at the 2003 Cauliflower Alley Club banquet. He was the uncle of actor Patrick Swayze. In retirement he lived in Hot Springs, Arkansas, traveled to see family and old friends, and in 2024 was inducted into the Arkansas Walk of Fame.

Bruce Swayze died on September 18, 2026, in Hot Springs, Arkansas, at the age of 87.
