Conrad Thomas Lant, known worldwide as Cronos, was an English bassist, singer and songwriter who founded the heavy metal band Venom and helped give extreme metal its sound, imagery and, through the title of Venom's second album, its most famous genre name. He died on 1 October 2026 at the age of 63.

Lant was born on 15 January 1963 in Kensington, London. His family moved to Newcastle when he was about seven or eight. He later recalled the shock of a new accent and a fight on his first day of school. As a teenager he played in local bands including Dwarfstar and a short-lived group called Album Graecum before taking the stage name Cronos, drawn from Capricorn and the Greek god Cronus associated with Saturn. In 1979 he joined Guillotine as a guitarist and met Jeffrey Dunn, later known as Mantas. When the band's bassist quit a week before a church-hall gig, Cronos switched to bass rather than cancel. The group became Venom. After vocalist Clive Archer (stage name Jesus Christ) left in 1980, Cronos took over vocals as well, locking in the classic three-piece with Mantas and drummer Anthony Bray (Abaddon).

While still young he worked at Impulse Studios in Newcastle and pushed the owners to launch Neat Records for rock and metal acts. Unable to afford studio time, he traded unpaid labour for free sessions and sent Venom demos to the press. Sounds journalist Geoff Barton featured the band, and Neat released Venom's first single. Cronos also designed Venom's logo and sleeve art, refining a personal version of the Sigil of Baphomet across albums and merchandise for decades.

Venom's early records, especially Welcome to Hell (1981), Black Metal (1982), At War with Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985), were raw, fast and blasphemous by design. Cronos later said Ozzy Osbourne sang about the Devil while he wanted to be the Devil. Metallica and Slayer opened for Venom in the United States; Cronos remembered hanging out with Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. At home in Britain the press often treated the band as a joke, and the original members later said there was little camaraderie. Cronos left in 1987 and formed the band Cronos, releasing Dancing in the Fire (1990) and Rock n' Roll Disease (1991). He also contributed to recordings by Warfare, Massacre, Cradle of Filth, Dave Grohl's Probot and HammerFall, and produced other acts.

In the early 1990s he trained as a fitness instructor and taught aerobics classes, sometimes with military participants. A climbing accident in Wales around 2002 left him unable to play bass or sing standing for nearly two years. He studied computing and multimedia, working as an engineer for Newcastle internet firms while rebuilding strength. He reformed Venom in the mid-2000s, releasing Metal Black (2006), Hell (2008), Fallen Angels (2011), From the Very Depths (2015) and Storm the Gates (2018) with later lineups that eventually settled as Cronos, guitarist Stuart "Rage" Dixon and drummer Danny "Dante" Needham. Venom's sixteenth studio album, Into Oblivion, arrived in May 2026 via Noise/BMG.

Away from the stage he spoke of birdwatching around his Northumberland home, growing hot chillis, and a lifelong love of Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell, Jethro Tull and Edgar Allan Poe. His elder brother Graham Lant drummed for Prefab Sprout; another brother, Anthony "Antton" Lant, later played drums in Venom. Relations with original partners Mantas and Abaddon remained strained; a 2024-2025 UK merchandise copyright dispute between Cronos and Abaddon over Venom artwork ended with mixed findings on logo ownership.

Venom announced his death on 1 October 2026. No cause or place of death was made public. His son Nathan thanked the Legions for supporting his father and said the legend of Cronos would never die. The band's statement extended condolences to Nathan and to a loved one named Hel. Across metal, Cronos was remembered as an uncompromising architect of extreme music whose voice, bass and vision remained at Venom's centre for more than four decades.

Conrad Lant died on 1 October 2026 at the age of 63. Venom announced the news on the band's official social channels with "profound sadness and broken hearts," stating that for more than four decades his voice, bass and vision had been at the heart of Venom. No cause of death and no place of death were disclosed in the initial statement or in early reports by Blabbermouth, Vice, Metal Injection and others.

The memorial traced his work from Welcome to Hell through Black Metal, At War with Satan, Possessed and beyond, calling him uncompromising, fearless and unmistakable. It thanked the Legions for decades of support. His son Nathan wrote that his father had laid down his soul, that his music would live on, and that the legend of Cronos would never die. Condolences were extended to Nathan and to a loved one named Hel. Funeral or public memorial details had not been announced at the time of first reports.

Conrad Thomas Lant was born on 15 January 1963 in Kensington, London, England. He described his early neighbourhood as South Chelsea and remembered seeing The Who's van and Mick Jagger around shops his mother used. The family moved to Newcastle upon Tyne when he was about seven or eight. The change of accent was hard; he recalled being called a cockney on his first day of school and ending up in a fight.

As a teenager he was restless and music-obsessed, listening to early Queen, Jethro Tull and, later, Kate Bush. He played in high-school bands including Dwarfstar (with Kevin "Ropa" Robson, Graeme "Shamus" Newton and Keith "Bod" Ballard) and a short-lived "futuristic metal cyberpunk" group called Album Graecum. He wanted to join the army, but a pellet-gun accident left him blind in his right eye and ended that plan. He took the stage name Cronos from astrology and myth: as a Capricorn associated with Saturn, he linked the name to the Greek god Cronus.

Education and early work

Formal schooling details beyond teenage years in Newcastle are not extensively documented in public sources. After leaving school, Lant began working at Impulse Studios, a Newcastle recording facility that released folk and comedy albums. He persuaded the studio to start Neat Records for rock bands and helped sign acts from across the United Kingdom beginning around 1980. Because Venom could…

After leaving school, Lant began working at Impulse Studios, a Newcastle recording facility that released folk and comedy albums. He persuaded the studio to start Neat Records for rock bands and helped sign acts from across the United Kingdom beginning around 1980.

Because Venom could not afford studio time, Cronos arranged free sessions by staying late and doing unpaid tasks for the engineer. He mailed demos to labels and the rock press. When Sounds magazine's Geoff Barton featured three Venom songs in a playlist, Neat agreed to release the band's first single. That studio apprenticeship trained him as both musician and visual designer for Venom's packaging.

Career with Venom and beyond

In 1979 Lant joined Guillotine as a guitarist and met Jeffrey Dunn (Mantas). When the bassist quit a week before a gig, Cronos switched to bass and the band became Venom. With Mantas and Anthony Bray (Abaddon), Venom recorded Welcome to Hell (1981), Black Metal (1982), At War with Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985), plus the live set Eine kleine Nachtmusik (1986). Black Metal gave a name to an entire genre. Possessed's title track later appeared on the PMRC "Filthy Fifteen" list, which Cronos treated as a badge of honour.

He left Venom in 1987 and formed the band Cronos, releasing Dancing in the Fire (1990) and Rock n' Roll Disease (1991). Guest appearances included Warfare, Massacre's Inhuman Condition, Cradle of Filth's Haunted Shores, Probot's Centuries of Sin and HammerFall's Knights of the 21st Century. The classic Venom lineup briefly reunited in the mid-1990s (Cast in Stone, 1997; Resurrection, 2000) before fractures returned.

After a climbing injury paused performing around 2002-2004, Cronos rebuilt Venom with new members, releasing Metal Black (2006), Hell (2008), Fallen Angels (2011), From the Very Depths (2015) and Storm the Gates (2018). From about 2009 the lineup of Cronos, Rage (Stuart Dixon) and Dante (Danny Needham) remained stable for years. Into Oblivion, Venom's sixteenth studio album, was released in May 2026 via Noise/BMG.

Public tributes after his death named his son Nathan, who thanked Venom's fans, the Legions. The band's memorial also sent condolences to a loved one named Hel; the exact relationship was not clarified in early reports. Marital history was not a detailed matter of public record in sources reviewed.

In interviews he described a double life: the demonic stage persona versus a Geordie who taught aerobics, watched birds around a Northumberland home, grew Carolina Reapers and other chillis, and loved Kate Bush enough to dye his hair henna red as a youth. He kept a Kate Bush poster signed "To Cronos" from a 1980 Newcastle signing session where she kissed him on the lips. He also cited Edgar Allan Poe, Joni Mitchell and Jethro Tull among personal likes.

Beliefs and views

On stage Cronos cultivated Satanic and blasphemous imagery as theatre and provocation rather than a quiet private creed. He said he wanted to be the Devil while others only sang about him, and he enjoyed using profanity for shock. Off stage he spoke more about creativity as an open medium, from mud on canvas to computer graphics and, later, experimenting…

He said he wanted to be the Devil while others only sang about him, and he enjoyed using profanity for shock. Off stage he spoke more about creativity as an open medium, from mud on canvas to computer graphics and, later, experimenting with AI for visual art while insisting he would always write his own music.

He was frank about the lack of friendship inside classic Venom, rejecting myths of camaraderie. In later years he said he wanted nothing to do with Mantas and Abaddon. He remained grateful to the Legions, Venom's worldwide fanbase, and framed loyalty from record buyers and concert-goers as central to the band's survival.

Legacy and impact

Venom's early albums are widely credited with helping invent thrash, death and black metal aesthetics. Metallica, Slayer, Celtic Frost, Mayhem, Behemoth and countless others have cited the band. The title Black Metal became shorthand for a global underground. Cronos's bass-and-vocal attack, plus his logo and sleeve designs, made Venom visually and sonically unmistakable. He kept Venom active across lineup changes for more than four decades, outlasting industry dismissals in Britain and internal splits. Into Oblivion in 2026 showed he was still writing and touring shortly before his death. Obituaries called him a godfather of black metal and an architect of extreme music whose influence runs through nearly every heavy style that followed Newcastle's NWOBHM moment.

Awards, influence and recognition

Venom and Cronos were not primarily a trophies-and-ceremony act. Recognition came through influence lists, festival headline slots (including Wacken and Dynamo reunions), coverage in metal press, and the enduring use of Black Metal as a genre name. The PMRC "Filthy Fifteen" listing of Possessed was a cultural flashpoint rather than a prize. His designs for Venom logos and artwork became…

His designs for Venom logos and artwork became contested intellectual property in UK litigation with Abaddon and distributors in 2024-2025, underscoring how central those images were to the brand. Guest spots with Probot and HammerFall and production work for other Neat-era acts added further credits beyond Venom's own catalogue.

Media and popular culture

Cronos gave many interviews across Sounds, Kerrang!, Metal Hammer, Louder, Lords of Metal and YouTube channels, often mixing humour with blunt assessments of metal history. A major Louder/Metal Hammer feature in August 2026 around Into Oblivion detailed his fitness work, climbing accident, multimedia career and Kate Bush story. Classic Rock and related titles recirculated his 1980 Bush signing anecdote. Venom's…

Venom's music appears throughout metal documentaries and influence roundups. Official audio and live clips of Welcome to Hell, Black Metal and later songs remain widely circulated. The band's social channels and venomslegions.com were the primary public homes for news, including the October 2026 memorial statement.

Controversies

Venom's Satanic imagery and lyrics drew moral-panic attention in the 1980s, including the PMRC Filthy Fifteen listing. Cronos treated that outrage as publicity. Internal band relations were chronically poor; classic members described bad blood, and later years saw parallel Venom-branded projects (Venom Inc., Mantas/Abaddon anniversary shows) while Cronos led his own Venom lineup. In June 2024 Cronos sued Abaddon and Plastic Head Music Distribution over merchandise using contested Venom designs. Abaddon counterclaimed. Court reporting summarised that Bray was found owner of the original logo while Lant was deemed creator and copyright owner of most other disputed artistic works, based partly on Lant's design sketches. Estrangement from brother Antton was also aired publicly in earlier metal press.
