Robert Lee Bryson, known to the world as Peabo, was born Robert Peapo Bryson on 13 April 1951 and died on 2 June 2026. An American singer and songwriter whose voice carried both tenderness and power, he made his first album, Peabo, in 1976, working alongside Luther Vandross and Cissy Houston. That record opened the door to Capitol Records, and in 1978 he released two albums, Reaching for the Sky and Crosswinds, each of which went on to be certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America.
Duets became something of a signature for him. He joined Natalie Cole for We're the Best of Friends in 1979, and Roberta Flack for Born to Love in 1983, a partnership that produced the much loved single "Tonight, I Celebrate My Love".
A move to Elektra Records followed in 1984, bringing with it "If Ever You're in My Arms Again", a song that sat at the top of the adult contemporary chart for several weeks. Through those years he placed a string of albums in the top ten of the US Billboard R&B albums chart, and in 1991 Can You Stop the Rain reached number one.
He also lent his voice to Disney's animated films, singing "Beauty and the Beast" with Celine Dion and "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle. The latter became the first song from an animated feature to top the Billboard Hot 100. Both duets won him Grammy Awards.
