This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago, before I fully absorbed it as a future reality... It is an honor, an honor that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness. But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly.

Twelfth-child cabin and Locust Ridge songs

Born January 19, 1946, in Pittman Center, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children of Avie Lee (Owens) and Robert Lee Parton. The family later lived on Locust Ridge in Sevier County. She sang in church, played a homemade guitar, appeared on the Cas Walker Show by about age ten, recorded for Goldband and appeared at the Grand Ole Opry at thirteen, and left for Nashville the day after graduating from Sevier County High School in 1964.

Sevier County High School, then Music City

Graduated Sevier County High School in Sevierville, Tennessee, in 1964. No college degree. Later honorary doctorates included a Doctor of Humane Letters from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (2009) and recognition from Carson-Newman. Lifelong literacy advocate through Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

From Wagoner TV to Queen of Country and Rockstar

Songwriting with uncle Bill Owens; Monument then RCA; Porter Wagoner Show partnership; solo breakthroughs with Joshua, Jolene, and I Will Always Love You; pop crossover Here You Come Again; film and song 9 to 5; Kenny Rogers duets; Trio with Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt; bluegrass Grammy era; Dollywood entrepreneurship; Rockstar (2023); Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2022); Jean…

Carl Dean, Aunt Granny, Brentwood home

Married Carl Thomas Dean on May 30, 1966, in Ringgold, Georgia; he died March 3, 2025. No biological children; they helped raise younger siblings and many nieces and nephews (Aunt Granny / Gigi). Godmother to Miley Cyrus. Longtime Brentwood, Tennessee residence. Pentecostal roots; described herself as a person of faith without forcing religion on others.

Faith, privacy, and leading with love

Avoided partisan endorsements (I don't do politics). Supported same-sex marriage publicly (2009) and spoke for transgender dignity amid Tennessee measures (2023). Emphasized self-belief, daily prayer, and kindness. Controlled her glamorous image with deliberate wit (It takes a lot of money to look this cheap).

Songs, Smokies jobs, and free books

More than 100 million records sold. Imagination Library global literacy. Dollywood as a major East Tennessee employer. Early Moderna research gift and vaccination advocacy. My People Fund after the 2016 Smoky Mountain wildfires. Cultural bridge across politics and generations. Estate plans for Dollyfest celebrations in Nashville and London in 2027.

Eleven Grammys and a humanitarian Oscar

Eleven Grammy Awards including Lifetime Achievement (2011). Country Music Hall of Fame (1999). National Medal of Arts (2004). Kennedy Center Honors (2006). Hollywood Walk of Fame (1984; second star with Trio 2018). Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2022). Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award (2025). Multiple CMA and ACM honors. Emmy recognition tied to Christmas on the Square (producer/star context).

Career fights more than scandals

Documented tensions and litigation with Porter Wagoner over management and fees after she left his show. Death threats after Travelin' Thru for the film Transamerica (2005). Industry debate over her pop crossover and carefully crafted image. Standard 2026 obituaries did not center any major criminal scandal.

Nashville, August 2026

Hospitalized at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center on August 21, 2026. Died there on August 25, 2026, at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer (type not disclosed; publicist Marcel Pariseau via AP and other outlets). Announced by nephew Bryan Seaver via official social video. Private funeral August 28, 2026; entombed at Woodlawn Memorial Park beside Carl Dean. Family requested Imagination Library donations in lieu of flowers.
