My daughter was seven when Lilo & Stitch came out and we must have watched it a hundred times on the bus trips to her grandma's in Cedar Rapids, she knew every line of Lilo's before she could read. Took me years to connect that same little voice to the girl crawling out of the TV in The Ring, which scared the life out of me in a theater in Des Moines back in 2002, maybe 2003, I don't remember exactly. Thirty five. That's it, that's the whole thing that keeps getting me, thirty five. Anyway my daughter's grown now with kids of her own and Stitch is still on in this house some Sunday mornings. Rest easy.

Daveigh Chase (24 July 1990 to 16 June 2026) was an American actress whose voice and face defined two of the most memorable children's roles of the early 2000s. In the same year, 2002, she gave voice to Lilo Pelekai, the lonely, Elvis-loving Hawaiian girl at the heart of Disney's Lilo & Stitch, and played Samara Morgan, the drowned ghost girl who crawls out of a television set in the horror film The Ring. She also voiced Chihiro in the English version of Hayao Miyazaki's Spirited Away and played Samantha Darko in the cult film Donnie Darko.
She was born Daveigh Elizabeth Chase-Schwallier in Las Vegas, Nevada, to Cathy Chase and John David Schwallier. Her parents divorced when she was young, each remarried, and she grew up with several half-siblings, including a younger half-brother named Cade. She later used her mother's surname professionally. Moving with her mother to Albany, Oregon, she sang country music in local talent shows and pageants and won a national vocal competition as a child. Her manager later said she started out around the age of four doing voiceover work and theatre in Las Vegas. In 1998 she shared the role of Norma Sanderson in the musical Utah! at the Tuacahn Amphitheatre, and at seven she was booking national commercials, including spots for Campbell's Soup.
Her first television role came in 1998 in Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Guest parts followed in Charmed, The Practice, ER, Touched by an Angel and Family Law, and she played a young Shawna Landon in the 1999 television film Michael Landon, the Father I Knew. In 2001 she was cast as Samantha Darko, the younger sister of Jake Gyllenhaal's title character in Richard Kelly's Donnie Darko, which became a cult classic.
The year 2002 made her internationally known. Her performance as Lilo won the Annie Award for Outstanding Voice Acting in an Animated Feature, and she returned to the role in Stitch! The Movie, the Disney Channel's Lilo & Stitch: The Series and the 2006 film Leroy & Stitch. As Samara in The Ring she wore heavy prosthetic makeup and performed demanding physical work, and she won the 2003 MTV Movie Award for Best Villain. "It is not your typical character," she told the Los Angeles Times. "I just kind of took my own voice and put this freaky twist on it."
She was a series regular as Joyce in the Fox sitcom Oliver Beene, and from 2006 to 2011 she played Rhonda Volmer, the teenage child bride of a polygamist prophet, in 32 episodes of HBO's Big Love, a role praised for its chilling edge. She voiced the title character in the PBS Kids series Betsy's Kindergarten Adventures, reprised Samantha in the 2009 sequel S. Darko, and in the 2010s worked mainly in independent films, including Yellow (2012), Little Red Wagon (2012), Jack Goes Home (2016) and American Romance (2016). Her last credit was the English voice of Kiwako Seto in the 2016 video game Let It Die.
Her longtime manager and friend John Ryan Jr. described her as private and unpretentious. "She was not very Hollywood," he said. "She'd rather eat at Bob's Big Boy and go home with the cats." She worked with cat rescues and often retreated to her home in Las Vegas for long stretches, turning down studio films in favour of independent projects.
After 2015 she stepped away from acting and lost contact with her family and friends. Her mother said she struggled with addiction after being prescribed painkillers for a back injury from a motorcycle accident around 2016, while her father said her struggles began in her early teens. Between 2017 and 2018 she faced charges in Los Angeles, including riding in a stolen car and drug possession, and in her final years she was reported to be homeless in downtown Los Angeles. Her mother last saw her in October 2019.
In June 2026 she was admitted to a Los Angeles hospital for severe malnutrition, where she was found to have bacterial meningitis and serious blood infections. She died on 16 June 2026, aged 35. The Los Angeles County medical examiner later listed the cause of death as AIDS, with chronic polysubstance use as a significant condition, and the manner of death as natural. She was cremated on 10 July 2026 and her ashes were released to her mother. Lilo & Stitch directors Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois shared a tribute drawing of a crying Stitch with Scrump and Pudge, and fans around the world remembered the girl who gave Lilo her voice.
