David Šmídt was a Czech musician and radio executive who spent two decades in two worlds at once. As the keyboardist, songwriter and co-producer of the Prague pop-rock band Eddie Stoilow, he helped write some of the most played Czech radio songs of the 2010s, including "Frozen", "Baby" and "With You". At the same time he rose through Czech commercial radio to become programme director of Evropa 2 and later head of all the stations in the Active Radio group, including Frekvence 1, Rádio Bonton and Dance Rádio. He died on 21 October 2026, aged 49, after a serious illness.
Details of his early life, including his date and place of birth, have not been made public. Eddie Stoilow formed in Prague in 2003, and according to Novinky and Deník Šmídt joined on keyboards in 2004, a year after the band began. Other outlets, including TN.cz and Evropa 2 itself, describe him as one of the band's founders, and in 2020 he was reported to be the owner of the Eddie Stoilow trademark. Singer Honza Žampa later said the two of them had shared a quarter of a century of composing, travelling and supporting each other.
The band built its audience slowly. It played Czech summer festivals from 2005, toured as a guest of Support Lesbiens, No Name and B.S.P., and spent a year in the studio on its debut album, released in 2009 under the tongue-in-cheek title The Best Of. Singles "Hey You" and "Floating" reached the upper end of the Czech radio charts. The second album, Oh My God!, followed in March 2011 and produced "Frozen", which Šmídt said was born in a living room late one evening when he sat down at the piano one last time before giving up for the day. In 2012 the band won the "Skokan roku" (Breakthrough of the Year) category of the Český slavík music awards.
Eddie Stoilow also became known for its friendship with Czech national goalkeeper Petr Čech, who played drums with the band at the Czech House in Wrocław during Euro 2012 and again at the Rock for People festival in July 2013. Čech appeared in the videos for "Baby" and "Piano Piece". The band signed with Warner Music for its third album, Sorry (2013), which Šmídt and Žampa produced themselves in their own studio. Jupiter followed in 2016. Eddie Stoilow opened for Simply Red at Prague's Forum Karlín in October 2015, and in 2018 "With You" reached number one on the Czech chart of the most played songs on radio. In 2019 the band supported The Rasmus on a European tour.
Alongside the band, Šmídt built a career in radio management. By 2019 he was programme director of Evropa 2 and Dance Rádio, owned by the Active group within Daniel Křetínský's Czech Media Invest. In November 2019 Active announced that he would take a newly created role as head of radios, succeeding Miroslav Škoda at the head of Frekvence 1 from December 2019 and also overseeing Rádio Bonton and Dance Rádio. Antonín Baudyš later wrote that he had helped make listening to the radio waves a pleasant experience.
In April 2020 Šmídt left Eddie Stoilow together with guitarist Jakub Lenz, bassist Martin Puškař and drummer Lukáš Kuneš, citing long-running internal disagreements, while singer Honza Žampa continued the band. Two months later Šmídt and Lenz launched a new project, The Carsleepers, which appeared in June 2020 with a run of singles, Native American inspired visuals and members hidden behind the pseudonyms Sam David and Sahimi. Only later was it revealed that the duo were the former Eddie Stoilow members. Singer Honza Petržílka joined during recording, and the trio released the debut album Shaman in April 2022, having delayed it because of the war in Ukraine.
Šmídt was married to Adéla, and the couple had children. In the final months of his life he faced what friends called an unexpected illness. He died in the early morning of 21 October 2026. The news was first shared on Facebook by his friend, the astrologer and writer Antonín Baudyš, and confirmed to iDNES.cz and TN.cz by sources close to him. The exact illness and the place of death were not made public. His death was the third loss in under a year for Evropa 2, following the deaths of presenters Patrik Hezucký in December 2025 and Luděk Hrzal in August 2026.
Paying tribute, Honza Žampa wrote that Šmídt had been like a brother, that together they had written "a ton of good music" and taken it around the world, and that he would play all their records that day in his memory.

In their own words
“We wrote Frozen in the living room after three hours of playing, when we had already drunk a bottle of red, nothing was coming out of us and we were getting ready to call it a day. I started playing the piano one last time and a song was born that our listeners love.”
