Dennis Dale "Denny" Trandem was a Minnesota lawman and Vietnam-era Army veteran who served as Sheriff of Clearwater County, Minnesota, for 16 years, from January 1991 to January 2007. After retiring from law enforcement he spent nearly two decades working for a funeral home in Bagley, the county seat, and became one of the most familiar volunteers in the community.
Trandem was born on October 9, 1946, in Northwood, North Dakota, to Walter Jennings and Eleanor Ingeborg (Kappedal) Trandem. In 1947 the family settled on a farm in Woodside Township near Erskine, in Polk County, Minnesota, where he grew up. He was confirmed at Maple Lake Lutheran Church and graduated from Fertile High School in 1964. He entered the United States Army in November 1965, served in Vietnam from January 1967 to January 1968 and then in Bad Aibling, West Germany, until October 1969, when he was honorably discharged.
He studied at Bemidji State University and then at Moorhead State University, graduating in 1974 with a degree in law enforcement. That year he became a dispatcher for the Moorhead Police Department, and from 1975 to 1978 he was a Moorhead patrol officer. He served on the Barnesville police force in 1978 and 1979 and worked for the Intercounty Community Council from 1980 to 1984. In November 1984 he joined the Clearwater County Sheriff's Office as a deputy, and on January 2, 1991, he took office as sheriff. He held the post until he retired on January 2, 2007.
Retirement lasted a single day. The next morning he started work at Cease Family Funeral Homes, where he helped grieving families for the rest of his life and was known for the saying "You call, we haul, that's all." He was a member of the Sheriff's Association, Irvin Blix American Legion Post 16 and VFW Post 2759, delivered Meals on Wheels, served on the Veterans Memorial board and the Bagley Community Education board, and volunteered every year in the Horticulture Building at the Clearwater County Fair.
Trandem married Margo Cecille Lohn in 1974, gaining six stepchildren; she died in 1997. He married Laila Haddeland in 1999, and she died of cancer in 2010. In 2014 he married Sharon Lee (Neill) Pratt. He enjoyed woodworking, jigsaw puzzles, golf, travelling the West on his trike and reading about the Second World War.
He died peacefully at his home in Bagley on October 31, 2026, aged 80, surrounded by his family. No cause of death was made public. His death was reported by Lakeland News. His favourite motto, his family wrote, was "Every day is a gift."
