Deva (born Devanesan Chokkalingam, 20 November 1950 to 17 October 2026) was an Indian film composer and singer who worked mainly in Tamil cinema and scored more than 400 films in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam across a career of nearly four decades. Known to fans as "Thenisai Thendral" (the breeze of sweet music), a title given to him by M. S. Viswanathan, he wrote the music for Rajinikanth's Annaamalai (1992) and Baashha (1995), whose title music still introduces the actor on screen, and he is widely credited with bringing gaana, the street song style of North Chennai, into mainstream Tamil film music.

Deva was born in Mylapore, Chennai, to M. S. Chokkalingam and M. S. Krishnaveni, and grew up in a household with little money. He had no formal musical training as a child. He learned the harmonium on his own while working in the Tamil theatre circuit, later studied piano under Dhanraj Master, who also taught Ilaiyaraaja, and learned Indian classical music on the harmonium from J. B. Krishna. In 1973 he co-founded a music troupe with the composer Chandrabose. Before films took off he worked for Doordarshan Podhigai, composing songs for the programme Vayalum Vaazhvum, and recorded several hundred devotional albums. His younger brothers Sabesh and Murali, who played in the orchestras of Ilaiyaraaja and others, helped bring him into the film industry, and he often said his career was built on their support.

His break came in 1985, when M. S. Viswanathan praised him at a function at the Tiruverkadu temple, urged producers to give him film work and named him Thenisai Thendral. Deva made his debut as a film composer with Maattukara Mannaru (1986), had his first major release with Manasukketha Maharasa (1989) and became a household name with Vaigasi Poranthachu (1990), which won him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Music Director. Annaamalai, produced by K. Balachander, was the highest grossing Tamil film of 1992, the same year A. R. Rahman arrived with Roja.

Through the 1990s Deva was one of the busiest composers in India. In 1996 alone he scored 36 films. His songs helped launch the careers of Ajith Kumar and Vijay with hits such as Aasai (1995), which brought a second state award, Kadhal Kottai (1996), Nerrukku Ner (1997), Ninaithen Vandhai (1998), Priyamudan (1998), Vaalee (1999) and Kushi (2000). He also scored Kamal Haasan's Avvai Shanmughi, Panchathantiram and Pammal K. Sambandam, and won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in Kannada for Amrutha Varshini. He sang extensively, for himself and for other composers, including A. R. Rahman, Anirudh Ravichander, Santhosh Narayanan and G. V. Prakash Kumar, and in 2023 he sang Chellakutty for the video game Venba.

Deva described his approach as simple and immediate, built around a catchy pallavi, and he was known for working at great speed. Some of his songs drew criticism for resembling existing tunes, which he and his brothers said reflected producers' reference tracks and adaptation rather than copying. He told BBC Tamil that gaana had become his signature and set him apart from composers who only wrote melodies, and he later said that if gaana was one of his eyes, melody was the other. His song from Porkaalam was played at the 2016 state funeral of former Singapore President S. R. Nathan, a moment Rajinikanth recalled when he honoured Deva at the Deva The Deva concert in Chennai on his 72nd birthday in 2022.

His son Srikanth Deva is a film composer, his brothers worked as the duo Sabesh and Murali, and his nephew Jai is an actor. Sabesh died in October 2025, a loss Deva spoke about publicly.

Deva died in Chennai on the morning of 17 October 2026, aged 75. News reports said he was taken to a private hospital in Kodambakkam with chest pain that morning and died at about 8.30 a.m. Maalai Malar reported the cause as a heart attack. Dinakaran noted that he died on the death anniversary of the lyricist Kannadasan. Tributes followed from across Tamil cinema, including from the veteran composer Shankar Ganesh.

In their own words

“Gaana has become my speciality. Many composers give melody songs. I would have become one of them. But I stand apart because I gave gaana songs.”

“It makes me very happy to hear that Tamil people living all over the world use those gaana songs for their joys and their sorrows.”

Had Baashha's intro theme stuck in my head all week, pulled it up on youtube again last night. Woke up to the news this morning before work. Didn't expect that to hit like it did.

Tamil Wikipedia records the family's ancestral village as Mangadu near Arcot in Vellore district. He grew up in a financially constrained household and did not receive formal musical training as a child. He was drawn to music through public performances and taught himself the harmonium while working in the Tamil theatre circuit, where he was associated with stage musicians such as Kamesh and Rajamani, at first in a non musical role before becoming a performer.

Musical training

Deva learned piano and Western music under Dhanraj Master, the teacher who also trained Ilaiyaraaja, and studied Indian classical music on the harmonium under J. B. Krishna. In 1973 he co-founded a music troupe with the composer Chandrabose, performing light music concerts. In 1992 he scored Annaamalai for Rajinikanth and producer K. Balachander, the year's highest grossing Tamil film. He followed it with Baashha (1995) and Arunachalam (1997), writing introduction songs and background scores built to lift the star's mass appeal. His Superstar title music is still used at the start of Rajinikanth's films.

In 1996 he scored 36 films. His music powered the rise of Ajith Kumar and Vijay through Aasai (1995), Kadhal Kottai (1996), Nerrukku Ner (1997), Ninaithen Vandhai (1998), Priyamudan (1998), Vaalee (1999), Kushi (2000), Mugavari and Citizen. He scored Kamal Haasan's Avvai Shanmughi, Panchathantiram and Pammal K. Sambandam, worked in Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and won the Filmfare Award for Best Music Director in Kannada for Amrutha Varshini. Over his career he composed for more than 400 films, with some outlets putting the figure at about 450.

Deva remained active as a singer into the 2020s, singing for Anirudh Ravichander (Maan Karate, 2014), Santhosh Narayanan (Karnan, 2021), Sean Roldan (Good Night, 2023), A. R. Rahman (Maamannan, 2023, and Lal Salaam, 2024), G. V. Prakash Kumar (Captain Miller, 2024) and others. In 2023 he sang Chellakutty for the Tamil cooking game Venba, and in 2024 he began composing for Charukesi, a Carnatic music themed film directed by Suresh Krissna.

Gaana and musical style

Deva is widely associated with popularising gaana, the folk song style of North Chennai, in Tamil cinema. He wrote many gaana songs in Chennai Tamil and sang them himself, helping a local form reach a mass audience. Beliefs and views

Deva believed a film song had to register with listeners at once, a view he set out in a 2018 interview with Scroll.in. Deva believed a film song had to register with listeners at once, a view he set out in a 2018 interview with Scroll.in. He embraced being identified with gaana, telling BBC Tamil that it had become his speciality and the reason he stood apart from the many composers who wrote only melodies, and that it gave him great happiness to hear that Tamils around the world used those songs in their joys and sorrows. He repeatedly credited M. S. Viswanathan for his start and invited him to sing in Vaidehi Vandhachu (1991) as a mark of gratitude.

Legacy and impact

Deva is remembered as the composer who held his own in the 1990s between Ilaiyaraaja and A. R. Rahman, and as the man who made gaana part of mainstream Tamil cinema. Rajinikanth credited him with lifting Baashha, saying that while he and director Suresh Krissna shared credit for its success, it was Deva's music that held the film up. Anirudh…

Some of Deva's songs drew criticism for similarities to existing tunes, particularly where producers had supplied reference tracks.
