My mother called to tell me, she still has the Tato cassette from when she lived in Jakarta in the nineties. I never understood a word of Pak Tua but the voice carried across a kitchen in Munich decades later. 59 is no age.

Doddy Katamsi (born Doddy Keswara Kartikajaya, 10 June 1967) was an Indonesian rock singer, songwriter and vocal coach, best remembered as the high, powerful voice of Elpamas on the 1991 album Tato and its defiant hit "Pak Tua", and later as the teacher behind many of Indonesia's best known singers. Friends and students called him Dokat. He died in Depok, West Java, on 15 October 2026, aged 59.
He was born into one of Indonesia's best known artistic families. His father, Amoroso Katamsi, was a naval doctor and actor remembered for playing Soeharto in the film Pengkhianatan G30S/PKI, and his mother, Pranawengrum Katamsi, was a soprano often called the mother of Indonesian seriosa singing. His older sister Ratna Arumasari became a pianist and his younger sister Aning Katamsi a soprano. Doddy took a different road. As a junior high school student in Yogyakarta he fell for hard rock, above all Led Zeppelin and its singer Robert Plant, and for Janis Joplin. Those influences shaped the strong, wide ranging voice he became known for. He later moved to Jakarta, finished senior high school in 1987, and studied information management at Universitas Gunadarma and international relations at Universitas Nasional.
In the Jakarta rock scene of the late 1980s he sang with Whizzkid, stepping in for the band at a 1990 drumming marathon, and he was the first vocalist of Voodoo, formed in Jakarta in July 1991. He left both when Elpamas, the rock band from Pandaan in East Java, asked him to replace its singer for the album Tato (1991). That record carried "Pak Tua", a song attributed to Iwan Fals (credited on releases to Pitat Haeng) whose lyrics were widely read as a jab at the ageing New Order ruler. Indonesian press later recalled that the song brought Elpamas a period of being barred from performing. It also made Doddy's voice famous. Album listings credit him as writer or co writer of several Elpamas songs, including "Negeriku", "Moral" and "Memori".
After Elpamas he worked with the Kantata collective of Iwan Fals, Sawung Jabo and Setiawan Djody. He is credited as a vocalist and co writer of "Langgam Lawu" on Kantata Samsara (1997) and sang occasional leads on Kantata Revolvere (1999). He sang backing vocals for Dewa on the album Laskar Cinta (2004), co wrote "Cinta Jangan Pergi" for Kotak's album Energi (2010), and appeared on screen in the films Cahaya Kecil (2013) and Rocker Balik Kampung (2018). On stage he fronted Seven Years Later, a classic and progressive rock band, and was a fixture of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Genesis tribute nights. In 2022 he launched the metal band Lawang Pitu with the single "Atas Nama". In 2014 he served as chairman of Musisi Peduli Indonesia, leading a benefit concert in Jakarta for victims of the Mount Kelud eruption.
For many Indonesians his greatest influence came off the record. He began teaching voice while still at university, and the work grew once Bams of Samsons became one of his early students. Through his school, Bengkel Vocal Dokat, he coached Ari Lasso, Once Mekel, Ariel of NOAH, Nicky Astria, Tantri of Kotak, Astrid and Nadin Amizah, among others, and he worked as a vocal coach on Indonesian Idol and X Factor Indonesia, where students included Mike Mohede, Firman Siagian, Judika and Mikha Angelo. He shared lessons on head voice and breathing on his own YouTube channel and once said that with the right technique he could turn even a tone deaf beginner into a singer.
His health had been fragile for years. In 2022 he told Jawa Pos that a leaking heart valve had left him with about 29 percent heart function, yet he was back on stage within days and said his remaining dream was a solo concert with his students. He kept performing, including at On The Rock Vol. 3 in Yogyakarta in 2024. He was also a dialysis patient. He was admitted to Rumah Sakit Universitas Indonesia (RSUI) in Depok on 1 September 2026; a planned heart bypass was ruled out because his body could not support it, and after a stent procedure he suffered delirium. He died at the hospital at 13.15 WIB on 15 October 2026 after 45 days of treatment for complications of heart disease and kidney failure. He lay in state at the family home in Meruyung, Limo, Depok, and was buried after Friday prayers on 16 October 2026 at TPU Komplek Hankam Pangkalan Jati in Pondok Labu, South Jakarta, where his mother is also buried.
He is survived by his daughter Chika, her husband and his grandchildren, and by his sisters. Chika described him as a strict but loving "family man" behind the rock and roll image. Colleagues including Atiek CB remembered a super energetic, generous teacher and a true rocker.
