Read once that she played Cosette in Les Miserables at the Vakhtangov when she was twelve years old. Fifty years on that same stage after that. That's the whole story right there.

Ekaterina Raikina was a Soviet and Russian stage and film actress who spent around half a century with the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow. Born into one of the best known theatrical families in the Soviet Union, she was the daughter of the satirist and comic actor Arkady Raikin and the actress Ruth Ioffe, and the elder sister of the actor and director Konstantin Raikin. She was named an Honoured Artist of the RSFSR in 1976.
She was born in Leningrad on 15 April 1938. Her first appearance on stage came at the age of 12, when she played Cosette in the Vakhtangov Theatre's production of Les Miserables. She trained at the Boris Shchukin Theatre School in Moscow, graduating in 1959, and joined the Vakhtangov company that same year.
At the Vakhtangov she played a long run of roles in productions including Ladies and Hussars, Princess Turandot, The Bourgeois Gentleman, Cinderella, The Idiot, Antony and Cleopatra and Irkutsk Story. She also appeared at the Moscow theatre U Nikitskikh Vorot. She worked in film far less often, preferring the stage, but her screen roles included Zapadnya, Honeymoon (Svadebnoe puteshestvie), Short Stories, Sofya Perovskaya, the television version of Ladies and Hussars and, in 1980, the comedy The Pious Martha, in which she played Dona Ines.
Raikina was married three times, each time to a fellow actor: first to Mikhail Derzhavin, then to Yuri Yakovlev, with whom she had her son Alexei Yakovlev, and later to Vladimir Koval of the Vakhtangov Theatre. Her family ties made her a living link to her father's celebrated career, and she spoke publicly over the years about the Raikin family. Her son Alexei also became an actor, appearing at the Yermolova Theatre before moving into business, which made three generations of the family who had worked on the Moscow stage.
Ekaterina Raikina died in Moscow on Tuesday 3 November 2026, aged 88. Her death was announced by her son, Alexei Yakovlev, and confirmed by a source quoted by the TASS news agency, who said she died of natural causes and remained conscious to the end. She had spent her final weeks in hospital after being admitted urgently in early October with suspected acute intestinal bleeding.
