Ella Fitzgerald sang with a purity of tone and a gift for improvisation that no one has matched. Her Songbook recordings of Gershwin, Porter and Ellington remain the standard, and she won 13 Grammy Awards.

My grandmother loved Ella. When she died we played their work at the funeral. Now they're both gone. Strange how connected it all is.
