Just watched her Nicaragua videos last night with my coffee, had no idea it would be one of her last posts. 24 is nothing. This one's hit me harder than I expected for someone I only knew through a screen.

Emma Marie Laurent was a 24 year old French content creator known to her online audience as a travel, van life and surf influencer. She built a following on Instagram under the handle @emmaalr, documenting her journeys, time spent living out of her van and her love of the ocean. Her posts showed her moving between countries and coastlines, and she described herself to followers in terms of a simple, barefoot way of living close to nature.
Laurent died on 9 October 2026 in a drowning accident in northern Nicaragua. She was travelling in the Chinandega region, where she was visiting one sister who lived locally and was accompanied by a second sister, when the pickup truck she and two other young women were riding in was swept away while attempting to cross the rain swollen Nahualapa River at around 1am. She and her fellow passengers, a 20 year old Swiss woman and a 19 year old Nicaraguan hotel worker, drowned after becoming trapped inside the vehicle. The driver, a 32 year old Mexican national, managed to escape and was the only survivor.
Her death mattered to her community of followers because it cut short a young woman who had built her public identity around travel, freedom and an outdoor life, and because the accident itself exposed a wider, recurring danger: unmarked river crossings in Nicaragua that become lethal during the rainy season. Nicaragua's co president Rosario Murillo publicly addressed the tragedy, cautioning that rivers which appear calm can turn dangerous within minutes during storms, and that the crossing had been attempted at an unsafe time.
Although the accident happened on 9 October 2026, it did not become widely known internationally until more than two weeks later, around 27 and 28 October 2026, when French and international outlets, including People magazine, reported on her death. The delay meant that much of the public tribute and media attention arrived weeks after Laurent had actually died, a detail that has itself shaped how the story has been told and understood.
In the days following the news becoming public, tributes from her online community described her as a joyful, warm presence who had shared her enthusiasm for travel and the outdoors with her audience. Nicaraguan authorities have said they are investigating the circumstances of the crossing, including the absence of warning signs or depth markers at the ford where the accident occurred.
