Enrique Eduardo Espejo Peña, known across Peru as Yuca, was a comedian and actor whose face became inseparable from decades of Peruvian television sketch comedy. He was born on 22 April 1951 in Barranca, Peru, and died in Lima on 11 September 2026 at the age of 75. Jorge Benavides, his longtime collaborator, confirmed the death on social media the same day.

Before television, Espejo lived a quieter working life. He moved to Lima at 15 to study, trained in public relations, and spent about a decade as head of savings at the Banco Hipotecario del Peru. His entry into show business was almost accidental. Around 1980, while looking for material connected to advertising work for a thesis, he visited a television channel, met comedian Tulio Loza, and was invited on as an extra. Months later he joined the cast of the landmark sketch show Risas y salsa on Panamericana Television.

The nickname that replaced his own name on screen came from fellow cast member Adolfo Chuiman during a blooper-style exchange on set. Espejo later recalled Chuiman joking that he had come back to pay for the yuca, the crowd laughing, and the label sticking. Through the 1980s he became a familiar comic foil: the ordinary man caught in absurd situations, often the character who absorbed the punchline blows. A 1987 bus-conductor sketch and related passenger bits helped fix him in the public memory. In 1986 he also appeared as a fotonovela lead opposite Monique Pardo, a brief glamorous detour that fans still mention when telling his origin story.

From the mid-1990s his career intertwined with Jorge Benavides. Espejo appeared in JB el imitador and JB Noticias, then across later Benavides vehicles including La paisana Jacinta, El especial del humor, JB en Willax, El wasap de JB, and JB en ATV. Signature sketches such as Rambo, where he played the battered sidekick to Benavides's action-hero parody, and La jugada polemica, where he was repeatedly drafted into chaotic football reenactments, showed his gift for physical comedy and improvisation. Benavides later said Yuca was the partner who never stayed quiet and who made improvisation possible. Espejo also stepped into film with Asu mare! 2 (2015) and La paisana Jacinta en busqueda de Wasaberto (2017). In 2013 he announced he was leaving live theatre to concentrate on television.

His life off camera included danger and controversy. In July 2015 he was among those injured when an explosive attack struck the La paisana Jacinta circus tent in San Juan de Lurigancho. In 2019 actress Clara Seminara accused him of inappropriate touching. In May 2023 a first-instance court imposed a three-year suspended prison sentence, a ruling his defence appealed. In January 2026 Seminara said she was withdrawing the complaint for humanitarian reasons linked to his health, while stating she had sought a public apology rather than money or jail. Those events remain part of the public record of his later years.

In March 2025 Espejo suffered a serious fall in the Lince district of Lima, sustaining a skull fracture and severe head trauma. He was treated in intensive care, later moved to intermediate care, and never fully recovered enough to return to television. On 11 September 2026 Benavides announced that Yuquita had died, asking followers to remember shared laughter rather than only grief, and recalling sketches such as La Farmacia. Colleagues including Carlos Vilchez spoke of decades of friendship. Espejo's children later thanked the public from his Instagram account for support at the wake. Cause of death was not officially detailed beyond the long decline after the 2025 accident.

For more than forty years, from Risas y salsa through the Benavides era, Enrique Espejo turned a nickname into a national comic identity. Peruvian television lost one of its most recognisable supporting stars, a performer whose presence alone could start a laugh before he delivered a line.

In their own words

La unica manera de recordarlo no es poniendo nos tristes, sino recordando hermosos momentos que vivimos juntos compartiendo risas y carcajadas.

Jorge Benavides announcing Espejo's death on Instagram, September 2026 (paraphrased from published Spanish text without em dashes)

Yuca era ese personaje que te daba la posibilidad de improvisar y nunca se quedaba callado.

Enrique Eduardo Espejo Peña was born on 22 April 1951 in Barranca, on Peru's central coast. At fifteen he moved to Lima to study. He trained in public relations and worked for about ten years as head of savings at the Banco Hipotecario del Peru before comedy took over his working life. That bank-to-studio path later became a staple of profiles about him: a steady office career abandoned after an accidental first brush with television.

Education and early work

After relocating to Lima he studied public relations. Contemporary profiles say he approached a television channel while seeking information connected to advertising and commercial production for academic work, then met Tulio Loza and accepted an invitation to appear as an extra. The bank job remained his day identity until television work became continuous in the early 1980s.

Career

Espejo's screen career ran from 1980 to 2025. On Risas y salsa he became Yuca, the comic everyman often written to take the fall. He briefly returned to a Risas y salsa revival in 2011, left live theatre in 2013, and appeared in the films Asu mare! 2 (2015) and La paisana Jacinta en busqueda de Wasaberto (2017).

Public reporting focused more on his work and later health than on a detailed private biography. Beliefs and views

Espejo rarely framed himself as a commentator. In interviews he described the craft of being the comic foil, the fictional blood and choreography behind roughhouse sketches, and the pride and frustration of living under a nickname that eclipsed his birth name. He defended his innocence against the Seminara accusation while the case proceeded through the courts.

Legacy and impact

For generations of Peruvian viewers, Yuca was the face that completed Benavides sketches and the Risas y salsa era of physical comedy. Tributes after 11 September 2026 stressed improvisation, loyalty on set, and the way his mere entrance could start a laugh. Benavides said La jugada polemica was never the same after Espejo left for health reasons, and that he still cast imaginary Yuca roles when planning parodies.

Awards and honours

Major international awards are not the centre of his public record. His honour was popular recognition: decades of continuous casting on Peru's main comedy franchises and affectionate farewell coverage across national media when he died.
