I only learned about Noël after he'd passed, but watching those old clips made me laugh until I cried. There's something beautiful about someone who spent his whole life poking fun at the pompous. The world needs more of that spirit.

Yes. Comedy as resistance. That's rare now.

Read about him in the paper this morning. A guy who threw pies at powerful people for fifty years and never apologized. That's commitment. Rest well, Noël.

Saw the Gates pie clip in a film studies class thirty years ago and never forgot it. He made anarchism funny and real in a way most people couldn't. Rest well, Noël.

Early life

Born 13 September 1945 in Liège, Wallonia, under a pious mother and a lawyer father. Catholic primary school Saint-Maur at Cointe; Salesian secondary schooling. Early passion for cinema and reading. Youthful delight in shocking priests in confession, per The Telegraph. University of Liège enrolment ended in expulsion after the glue attack on a Salazar-linked lecturer. Early rebellious actions against academic authorities prefigured the pastry campaign.

Education

Primary: école Saint-Maur, Cointe. Secondary: Salesians of Don Bosco. University of Liège (expelled; glue incident). Lifelong autodidact in cinema history, anarchist and utopian philosophy (Fourier, Campanella cited in commentary on his Anthologie), and slapstick tradition. No conventional film-school pedigree was required for his hybrid career as critic, actor and agitator.

Career and the birth of the entarteur

Film journalism at Friends of Film with invented reviews; acting with Jan Bucquoy; columns for Siné's press. The pie campaign begins with Marguerite Duras (1969) and continues through Cannes attacks, French media personalities, and politicians. Method: soft bakery cream pies, often with buried messages, cry of "Gloup! Gloup!", and a non-violence claim. Global breakthrough: Bill Gates pieing, Brussels, 4 February…

Personal life

Long resident of Brussels. The Telegraph described a modest northern Brussels house with five cats and wife, actress Sylvie Van Hiel. FR Wikipedia recounts Sylvie Van Hiel collaborating in the 2003 Quebec pieings (Jean Charest). Death on 23 August 2026 was confirmed to the press by Sylvie Broodthaers (La Libre / AFP / Belga; some outlets call her his wife).…

Beliefs and views

Self-described anarchist and "anarcho-confectioner." Homage to Alphonse Allais and silent-film slapstick. Utopian reading of Campanella and Fourier. Targets chosen for vanity, arrogance, or service to capitalist or hierarchical power. He insisted pies must not injure. After Gates, he spoke of an "Internationale pâtissière" of copycat brigades. He wanted to be remembered with playfulness; RTBF documentary coverage quotes him singing that…

Legacy and impact

Made "entarter" a recognised French verb in popular culture. Inspired Montreal and international pie activists. Entered pop culture via celebrity victims. Subject of RTBF documentary Noël Godin, profession entarteur (Angélique Stassin) aired after his death. NPR, Telegraph, Le Monde, RTBF and Belgian press framed him as the French-speaking world's best-known pastry prankster. His clips of Lévy and Gates remain circulating…

Awards and honours

Grand prix de l'humour noir, 1995 (he reportedly pied himself at the ceremony). Prix de la dent dure, 1996. Cultural recognition as the archetype of non-violent pie protest rather than state decorations.

Media and popular culture

Film roles in Sexual Life of the Belgians and Camping Cosmos. Documentary appearances including Homo Cinematographicus. Renaud song L'Entarté. Les Guignols gags silencing Bernard-Henri Lévy with cream tarts. Large TV archive of pieings (INA, RTBF, AP Archive). Books listed under timeline and facts.

Controversies

Criminal conviction related to pieing Jean-Pierre Chevènement. Arrests and bail after the 2003 Quebec pieings; police advised him not to return to Canada or the United States (his memoir account via FR Wikipedia). Critics called the acts assault; Godin called them soft, symbolic, and non-injurious. Repeated targeting of Lévy drew both applause and accusations of harassment; Godin argued Lévy's self-regard…

Death

Died in Brussels on 23 August 2026, aged 80. Confirmed by Sylvie Broodthaers to AFP/Belga; reported across RTBF, La Libre, Brussels Times, Le Monde, VRT, NPR, and The Telegraph. Cause not made public. Resting place not made public in sources used. RTBF scheduled memorial documentary programming immediately afterward.
