Ernestine Dixon Langford

Ernestine Dixon Langford lived a long life of hospitality, craft, and quiet service in coastal Georgia. She died peacefully at Heritage Oaks on St. Simons Island on 6 November 2025, at the age of 97. Born in Blackshear, Georgia, on 21 November 1927 to James Strickland "Jim" Dixon and Sarah Jane Proctor Dixon, she was one of thirteen children and a graduate of Blackshear High School.

In 1960 she made Glynn County her home with her husband, Hugh Langford. For nineteen years she worked as a telephone operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company, the kind of steady public facing work that suited her warmth and patience. At home she was a gifted seamstress who made many of her daughters' clothes, and a cook and baker whose kitchen was a gathering place. She was active in the Parent Teacher Association throughout the years her four children were in school, the sort of parent who showed up not only for her own children but for the community around them.

Her church and civic life were the other half of her vocation. She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than sixty five years. In the wider community she served the Exchangette Club of Brunswick for forty three years, the Woman's Club of Brunswick for thirty years, and the Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary for twelve years. She worked with the Dogwood Garden Club until it disbanded, received a state award for her service on the Easter Seal Board, and spent a decade with the Stroke Club. She also served as Georgia Federation Eighth District president for two years, two terms as president of the Woman's Club of Brunswick, and two years on a state committee. Leadership and membership were never separate for her. She showed up, stayed, and invited others along.

She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty nine years, Hugh Langford, by her parents, by eleven siblings, and by a son in law, Ronnie Sims. She is survived by daughters Judith Spaulding (Mike) of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Joanne Sims and Jeannie Bradford (Johnny) of Brunswick, and Jayne Smith (Kirk) of Athens, Georgia, by her sister Elinor Carter of Waycross, by five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held on 12 November 2025 at Brunswick Memorial Park Funeral Home, with burial in Brunswick Memorial Park. Pallbearers and honorary pallbearers included family members and representatives of the Woman's Club, the Exchangette Club, and the Southeast Georgia Health System Auxiliary. In lieu of flowers the family invited gifts to the Exchange Club of Brunswick, Tallulah Falls School, Make A Wish Georgia, or Hospice of the Golden Isles, causes Ernestine had supported for years.

Those who knew her remember southern hospitality that was not a phrase but a practice, a willingness to sew, bake, visit, and volunteer long after many would have slowed down. Her memorial is a place to light a candle for a mother, grandmother, and neighbor whose kindness shaped Brunswick for more than six decades.
