Eulalia Marzetti, known to family and neighbours as Lali, was an Argentine woman from the province of Santa Fe who served for years as a municipal justice of the peace in the small town of Pujato and who became known far beyond it as the mother of Lionel Scaloni, the head coach who led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup.

She was born on 9 February 1952 in Zavalla, a town close to Pujato in the farming country around Rosario. She spent her adult life in Pujato, about 40 kilometres from Rosario, where she made her home with her husband, Ángel "Chiche" Scaloni. The couple raised three children there: Mauro, Lionel and Corina. Corina later became known in the Rosario area for her bakery business, Scala Bakery, in Funes.

Alongside raising her family, Marzetti worked for several years as justice of the peace at the local municipal court in Pujato. Argentine reports describe the role as one that kept her in close and constant contact with the people of the town, and she remained a familiar figure there for the rest of her life.

Her health became a matter of public concern in 2021. In the middle of that year she suffered a stroke that required a hospital stay and a long period of rehabilitation. It happened about ten days before the start of the Copa América in Brazil, the tournament in which her son's team ended Argentina's 28 year wait for a major senior title. Scaloni dedicated that victory to her. In October 2021, after a World Cup qualifier against Peru, he spoke openly about how worried he was, telling reporters, "No estoy para pensar en el Mundial" (I am in no state to think about the World Cup). In later years few details of her recovery were made public, and her son repeatedly said that her wellbeing mattered more to him than any sporting result.

Eulalia Marzetti died on the night of Tuesday, 27 October 2026, in Pujato, at the age of 74, after complications from the health problems she had lived with for about five years. Her death was confirmed to Radio 2 in Rosario by sources close to the family. The Argentine Football Association, led by its president Claudio Tapia, sent its condolences to Scaloni and his family, and her son travelled to Pujato for the farewell, which the family kept private.

Never knew the woman, only that line Scaloni said when Argentina won in 2021, dedicating it to her because she was unwell. Still sat with me, that did.
