72 years old. I found his Keerthana videos on YouTube two years ago through a gospel playlist and never stopped listening while I work in the garden. Praying for his wife and children tonight, even without their names, the Lord knows them.

Ezra Sastry, often styled Rev. Dr. Ezra Sastry and also spelled Ezra Shastry, was a Telugu Christian singer, songwriter, composer and musician whom The Hindu called a "lyrical evangelist". For more than five decades he served Christian congregations across the two Telugu States, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, carrying the gospel through song rather than only through the pulpit.
Sastry was trained in Carnatic music, the classical tradition of South India, and played many musical instruments, according to profiles published by FEBA India and the United Evangelical Christian Fellowship (UECF) of New Jersey, which hosts a library of his recordings. That classical grounding shaped a body of devotional music that set Telugu Christian lyrics in an Indian musical idiom. He worked as a full-time gospel singer, musician and composer, and ran his recording and distribution work from Secunderabad under the name Music Ministries India.
His recordings include Andhra Christian Hymns, released by T-Series in 1996 with songs such as Siluve Naa Saranaayenuraa, Aparaadhini Yesayya and Devuni Prema Idigo; Suprasidha Suvartha Sunaadamulu (1996); Andhra Christava Keertanalu (2002); the Andhra Christian Songs volumes; and Silver Jubilee Melodies of Ezra Sastry, a collection that includes Ye Reethi Nee Runam, Bhajayinthumu Ninnu and Thaara Velase. He also composed the music for the album Nireekshana Neevegaa, whose singers included the film playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam and the composer M. M. Srilekha alongside Sastry himself. Ye Reethi Nee Runam is among the songs most often shared in his memory, and he sang it for his own channel in 2022.
Beyond recording, Sastry built platforms for other musicians. His official channel describes him as the founder of Keerthana and of the Yesu Naama Gaana Sabha, and his Keerthana programmes introduced new singers and players to Telugu Christian audiences. FEBA India said he had been an encouragement in bringing many talents to serve in Christian music. In later years he spoke about his life and faith in long interviews, including Aantharyam with A. R. Stevenson (2020 and 2021), Open Heart with Ravi Kiran on Adarana TV (2021), a 2017 interview on Anveshi TV, a testimony for Joshua Elliot Ministries that introduced him as a singer of more than 10,000 gospel songs, and a 2023 FEBA India feature on the story behind the hymn Aakaasha Vaasulaaraa.
Sastry died of cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Secunderabad in the early hours of Saturday, 10 October 2026. He was 72. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son. Jetti A. Oliver, chairman of the Telugu Christava Sahithi Samithi, said that in his death "we lost a melodious singer, songwriter, composer, musician and, above all, a music therapist and lyrical evangelist par excellence." Tributes were posted within hours by churches and musicians across the Telugu Christian community, including Christian Music College International founder Dr. K. Maharshi. His funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Sunday, 11 October 2026 at Centenary Baptist Church in Secunderabad, after which he will be laid to rest at the Secunderabad Christian Cemetery.
His exact date and place of birth have not been made public.
