Never followed him, not my kind of music. But "Toutes les femmes sont belles" is a genuinely well built song. 79.

Frank Michael, born Franco Gabelli, was an Italian-born Belgian singer who spent more than fifty years singing about love and became one of the best-selling voices of popular French-language chanson. Best known for "Toutes les femmes sont belles", he sold, by his own account, between 15 and 20 million records, and played up to 200 galas a year for an audience so loyal that the press nicknamed him the crooner of the seniors.
He was born on 7 May 1947 in Bedonia, in the Province of Parma in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Some reports say he himself claimed a later birth year of 1953, but Belgian and French obituaries give 1947. He was an only child. He later told France Dimanche that his difficult birth, six days overdue, had been something of a miracle. When Franco was three, the family left Italy for Wallonia and settled in Seraing, near Liège, where his father worked as a miner. Seraing stayed his home for the rest of his life. "Mon port d'attache, c'est ici," he told Le Soir.
Elvis Presley was his lifelong idol. He entered radio and television talent contests from the age of sixteen, but music did not pay, so he trained and worked as an electronics technician. His break came in 1974 with his first single, "Je ne peux vivre sans toi", released on RCA. In 1978 he took part in the Belgian preselection for the Eurovision Song Contest with "A qui parler d'amour". For two decades he built a following in Wallonia and northern France through word of mouth and constant touring, writing many of his best songs with the lyricist Michel Mallory.
Success on a much larger scale came with the album "Toutes les femmes sont belles", released at the end of 1996. The title song became his signature and, according to RTBF, sold around 100,000 copies in Belgium and more than 200,000 in France. Albums such as "Le chanteur des amoureux" (1998) and "Il est toujours question d'amour" (2000) followed. In 2003 Didier Barbelivien, Michel Mallory and Johnny Hallyday wrote songs for "Entre nous", which brought him his first gold record in France. The same year he fulfilled a lifelong dream by recording "Thank You Elvis" in Nashville with Elvis Presley's own musicians and backing singers, singing Presley standards in French and Italian. In 2004 he was made an Officer of the Order of the Crown of Belgium, and the journalist Frédéric Rapilly published his biography, "Pour toujours et à jamais".
Television often ignored him, and critics mocked his sentimental songs, but he shrugged it off. "Julio Iglesias ou Mike Brant ont fait exactement ce que je fais. Tout le monde a chanté l'amour, il n'y a pas de gêne à ça," he told AFP in 2006. His audience, which he said was about 90 percent women, filled the Paris Olympia and the Palais des Sports, and through the 2000s and 2010s almost every new album was certified gold or platinum. Libération reported in 2004 that he received up to 30,000 fan letters a week. "Je suis un confident," he said.
Private by nature, he described himself as a believer and said he lost his temper about once every ten years. He never married. He had one daughter, Sandra Gabelli, from an earlier relationship, and from around 2005 he shared his life with his partner Christelle. He suffered health problems in later years, including emergency surgery in 2015 for a severely narrowed carotid artery.
On 12 April 2024 his producer announced a farewell tour for 2024 and 2025 to mark fifty years on stage. His longtime producer Enzo Falzone said his last gala was in a church in Bischwiller, Alsace, in December 2025, and that he was already very tired. Frank Michael died during the night of 11 to 12 June 2026, aged 79, from an aggressive lung cancer that, Falzone said, took him within a month. His daughter Sandra announced the news on Facebook. Fans paid their respects at the funeral home in Jemeppe-sur-Meuse, and on 20 June 2026 about 400 people attended his funeral at the Church of Saint-Firmin in Rotheux. He was buried in the Bergerie cemetery in Seraing, where a statue in his likeness was unveiled.
