Frida Kahlo painted her own pain and identity in unflinching self-portraits after a bus accident at 18 left her with lifelong injuries. She lived and died in the Blue House in Coyoacán, now a museum.

My grandmother loved Frida. When she died we played their work at the funeral. Now they're both gone. Strange how connected it all is.

I met Frida once, very briefly, and they were kind to a nervous stranger. That's what I'll remember.
