Govindan Vijayaraghavan, known professionally as Dr G. Vijayaraghavan, was an Indian cardiologist who helped bring two-dimensional and Doppler echocardiography into routine Indian practice, and who later founded and led one of Kerala's major private hospital groups. He died on 20 September 2026 in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 84, two days after his birthday. The Government of India had awarded him the Padma Shri in 2009 for contributions to medical science.
He was born on 18 September 1942 at Perumpuzha in Kollam district, then part of the Kingdom of Travancore, the son of Sahithya Siromany M. K. Govindan, a Sanskrit scholar. At Trivandrum Model School he became one of India's early Bharat Scouts and was congratulated in New Delhi by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. He graduated in medicine from Trivandrum Medical College in 1964, took an MD in general medicine in 1969, and earned a DM in cardiology at Christian Medical College, Vellore, in 1973. He began his academic career there as an associate professor before returning to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College in 1976.
Back in Kerala he pursued research on endomyocardial fibrosis, a restrictive cardiomyopathy that was then relatively common in the state, in collaboration with the Postgraduate Medical School and Brompton Hospital in London. His findings on the disease, and on Cerbera odollam (commonly called cerebra odollum) plant poisoning used in suicides in South India, were published in international journals and shaped clinical protocols that remained in use for decades. In the cardiac catheterisation laboratory at CMC Vellore he had already performed more than a thousand paediatric and adult procedures.
In 1979 and 1980 he established what is widely described as India's first dedicated two-dimensional echocardiography laboratory. Through nationwide continuing medical education programmes in the 1980s he helped make 2-D echo the most widely used cardiology investigation in the country. In 1982 he trained in colour-coded echocardiography at Brompton Hospital. In 1983 he spent a year as a senior research associate at the V.A. Wadsworth Medical Center, University of California, Los Angeles, becoming a pioneer in Doppler echocardiography and co-authoring Doppler Echocardiography: A Practical Manual (John Wiley and Sons, 1985), among the earliest US textbooks on the subject. Further Doppler training followed at the Mayo Clinic in 1986.
As professor and head of cardiology he built a modern department at Trivandrum Medical College, the main tertiary cardiac referral centre for Kerala, and also headed cardiology at Medical College, Kottayam. From 1985 to 1993 he directed echo Doppler laboratories at Kuwait University and the Chest Diseases Hospital. With support from the World Health Organization and the Government of India he documented the high prevalence of heart attacks and cardiovascular risk factors among poorer communities in Kerala. He later became founder director and vice-chairman of the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS Healthcare) in Thiruvananthapuram, and chaired Aswini Specialty Hospital. He also served as president of the Society for Continuing Medical Education and Research, Kerala, and as editor-in-chief of the Indian Journal of Clinical Cardiology.
His honours included fellowships of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of London and Edinburgh, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association (Premier Golden Heart Fellowship), the Indian College of Cardiology, the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, the International Medical Sciences Academy and the Cardiological Society of India. Lifetime achievement awards came from the Indian Academy of Echocardiography, the Indian College of Cardiology and the Cardiological Society of India. He was elected chief patron of the Indian Association of Clinical Cardiologists at IACCCON 2010 in Thiruvananthapuram, and sat on the Indian editorial boards of the American Heart Association journals Circulation and Hypertension while chairing the Echo Council of the Cardiological Society of India.
Beyond research papers he wrote and edited books for clinicians and the Malayalam-reading public, including Hridayam Hridrogam (1987), Cardiovascular Disease Prevention (1996), Intensive Coronary Care: the Trivandrum Protocol (1997) and Hridrogam Keraleeyaril (2003). Colleagues remembered him as a master teacher who spent decades training generations of Indian cardiologists in bedside echo and critical care imaging. News of his death on 20 September 2026 was reported by Mathrubhumi and other Kerala outlets, which noted his role in establishing echocardiography in India and his leadership of KIMS. Cause of death was not made public. Funeral and memorial details were not fully announced in the first reports.
