Nebojsa Radunovic was one of Serbia's leading physicians in obstetrics and gynecology, perinatal medicine, and human reproduction. Born on 18 May 1954 in Kosovska Mitrovica, then in the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia, he built a career that linked the Clinical Center of Serbia with European professional societies and American medical schools. He died in Belgrade on 15 September 2026, aged 72. The Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts (SANU) announced his death the same day and called the loss a heavy one for the Academy and for Serbian society.
Radunovic studied medicine at the University of Belgrade Faculty of Medicine, graduating in 1978 with distinction (Serbian sources note an average mark of 9.48 and a place among the top students of his generation). He earned a master's degree in 1982 under academician Vladimir Kanjuh and a doctorate in 1985 under academician Vojin Sulovic. He completed specialty training in obstetrics and gynecology in 1985 and a narrower specialization in perinatology in 1993. From 1979 he worked at the Institute for Gynecology and Obstetrics of the Clinical Center of Serbia, where he later headed prenatal diagnostics (from 1991), led the Department of Human Reproduction (from 1998), and served as institute director from 2003 to 2009. He was also assistant director of the Clinical Center of Serbia for international cooperation.
On the Belgrade medical faculty he rose through the teaching ranks: assistant (1987), docent (1994), associate professor (1999), and full professor (2004). From 2001 he headed the chair of postgraduate studies in human reproduction and led English-language teaching. A Fulbright fellowship took him to Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York in 1990-1991. From 1997 he was adjunct professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at New York University School of Medicine; he later held visiting appointments at Yale (from 2003) and Indiana University (from 2004).
His research and clinical work focused on fetal physiology and pathophysiology, prenatal diagnosis, and the treatment of fetal disease inside the uterus. SANU and Serbian press obituaries highlighted diagnostic methods for detecting inherited and acquired disorders of the embryo and fetus in the first and second trimesters; pioneering "closed" intrauterine surgery to correct selected anomalies; and his own technique of fetal blood transfusion through the umbilical cord, which improved outcomes for fetal anemia. He also contributed to assisted reproduction and infertility care, including in vitro maturation of oocytes and culture to the blastocyst stage. His bibliography is reported at about 330 items, including 16 books and monographs, four textbooks, and six chapters in foreign books. Papers associated with his name appear in journals such as the Journal of Maternal-Fetal and Neonatal Medicine and the Journal of Pediatric Surgery.
Radunovic held leading roles in professional societies: president of the Association for Perinatal Medicine of Serbia, president of the Serbian Society for Human Reproduction, and founder-president of the South East European Society for Perinatal Medicine (SEESPM). He sat on the educational committee of the European Association for Perinatal Medicine (EAPM), belonged to ESHRE, and served as vice-president of the Mediterranean Society for Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (MEDUOG). In Serbia he chaired the National Commission for Perinatal Medicine and sat on the Ministry of Health's National Commission for Assisted Reproduction. He was a corresponding member of the Medical Academy of the Serbian Medical Society from 2004 and edited or helped edit series such as Recent Advances in Perinatal Medicine and the Ankara journal Gynecology, Obstetrics and Reproductive Medicine.
SANU elected him a corresponding member of the Department of Medical Sciences on 5 November 2009 and a full member on 5 November 2015. Inside the Academy he chaired the Committee on Human Reproduction and served on boards dealing with cardiovascular pathology, diabetes research, urogenital tumors, AIDS, and the study of national minorities and human rights. Awards cited in Academy and press material include the Serbian Medical Society charter (1987) and plaque (1991), Belgrade's October Prize for scientific research (1993), ultrasound-society and Macedonian Medical Society plaques, honorary membership of the Romanian perinatal medicine association (2007), and a special University of Ankara award (2008).
Public obituaries in September 2026 did not name a cause of death.
